Vedanta Plant Blast in Chhattisgarh Kills 14, Injures 20

New Delhi— At least 14 people were killed and 20 others injured after a boiler explosion at a power plant operated by Vedanta Ltd in India’s Chhattisgarh, police said on Wednesday.

The incident occurred on Tuesday at the company’s facility in Singhitarai, about 230 km from the state capital Raipur. Authorities said the cause of the blast has not been definitively established.

“The death toll from the Vedanta power plant blast in Chhattisgarh has risen to 14, and the number of injured has increased to 20,” District Superintendent of Police P.K. Thakur told Reuters.

Preliminary assessments suggest the explosion may have been triggered by overheating in a boiler tube, Thakur said, though investigations are ongoing.Vedanta said in a statement that an “unfortunate incident” had taken place at its Singhitarai plant and that it had initiated a detailed probe to determine the cause.

The company did not provide further details on the extent of damage or the condition of those injured.

Industrial accidents remain a recurring safety concern in parts of India’s energy and manufacturing sectors, where aging infrastructure and maintenance issues are often cited as contributing factors.
