Kolkata – India’s head coach Gautam Gambhir offered a confident and encouraging assessment of the Kolkata pitch after India’s narrow

Kolkata – India’s head coach Gautam Gambhir offered a confident and encouraging assessment of the Kolkata pitch after India’s narrow loss in the opening Test against South Africa. He emphasised that the surface was fair, competitive and designed to test skills at the highest level.

Despite the low-scoring nature of the match, Gambhir reiterated that the pitch held no hidden surprises. He said there were “no demons” and that strong technique and patience were the keys to scoring.

India were chasing 124 for victory but finished at 93, ending the match inside three days. Yet the contest was exciting, intense and full of moments that showcased cricket’s unpredictable beauty.

Gambhir defended the decision to prepare a pitch offering both spin and seam assistance. He highlighted that such wickets develop temperament, technique and adaptability for long-term success.

According to the coach, it was not a typical turning track, nor was it unfair to batters. He pointed out that most wickets fell to seamers, proving that the surface offered balanced opportunities.

Gambhir also stressed that modern Test cricket requires players to handle a variety of challenging conditions. He said the pitch rewarded those who defended well and punished only those who lost patience.

He noted that matches like these build character and push players to elevate their mental toughness. Gambhir remained optimistic that the team would learn quickly and respond strongly in the next match.

South Africa’s first-innings lead of 30 runs proved crucial in the final outcome. On the third morning, the visitors resumed at 97-3 and looked briefly under pressure from India’s bowlers.

But South Africa captain Temba Bavuma played a remarkable unbeaten knock of 55. His calmness and clarity helped his side set a competitive target despite a swinging, turning ball.

Bavuma’s innings was praised as a masterclass in patience and disciplined defence under pressure. He built a vital 44-run stand with Corbin Bosch for the eighth wicket, frustrating India’s bowlers.

The South African skipper admitted the bounce was tricky, with some deliveries rising sharply while others stayed low. Even so, he backed his defence and stuck to his simple, compact style of play.

His innings reflected pure concentration and smart shot selection in conditions where aggression was risky. Players from both sides struggled to attack freely, making Bavuma’s stability even more admirable.

India, meanwhile, were effectively a batter short. Captain Shubman Gill did not bat in the second innings after retiring hurt earlier with a neck injury.

Even with one less batter, the Indian team fought bravely and kept the match alive till the final sessions. Their bowlers consistently created pressure, showing discipline and commitment throughout.

Gambhir praised the Indian bowlers for exploiting the conditions smartly and maintaining intensity.
He said the team displayed passion and resilience even in difficult phases.

He also expressed confidence that the squad will bounce back with renewed focus in the next Test. Gambhir emphasised that setbacks like these are part of a larger learning journey for a young team.

The coach highlighted that Test cricket’s charm lies in such unpredictable, low-scoring thrillers. He believes conditions like Kolkata’s help prepare teams for diverse global challenges.

Cricket lovers enjoyed a gripping contest where bowlers dominated and batters had to earn every run. The match showcased the beauty of traditional red-ball cricket, where grit often outweighs flamboyance.

As India prepare for the next match, optimism remains high. Gambhir’s belief in his team, combined with the players’ hunger to improve, sets a positive tone.

The Kolkata Test may not have gone India’s way, but it delivered valuable experience and lessons. Both sides walked away with admiration for Bavuma’s composure and India’s fighting spirit.

Bengaluru – India’s cricketing stalwarts, Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, remain strong and capable despite a setback in the first

Bengaluru – India’s cricketing stalwarts, Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, remain strong and capable despite a setback in the first of three one-day internationals (ODIs) against Australia, according to former Australian captain Ricky Ponting.

India suffered a seven-wicket defeat in Perth, but Ponting believes the two veteran players will quickly regain form and continue to contribute significantly to the team’s success.

The series, which is part of India’s international cricket calendar leading up to the 2027 Cricket World Cup, moves to Adelaide on Thursday before concluding in Sydney on Saturday.

While Kohli and Rohit did not have their best outings in Perth — Rohit was dismissed for 8, edging Josh Hazlewood to second slip, and Kohli was caught for a duck off Mitchell Starc — Ponting emphasized that these small setbacks should not overshadow their legacy and talent.

“You don’t write off champion players ever. These two have been among the best, and while I’ve said before that Virat’s the best 50-over player I’ve ever seen, you don’t write them off,” Ponting said on the ICC Review podcast.

He added that both players are likely to make a strong comeback in Adelaide, a venue he described as ideal for batting and a rewarding place to play cricket.

Kohli and Rohit now play exclusively in the 50-over format, having retired from other formats of the game. Their return to competitive cricket on Sunday was their first since winning the Champions Trophy in March, marking a new chapter as they focus on preparation for the next World Cup.

Despite the initial hiccup, the duo’s experience, skill, and mental toughness are expected to shine through in the upcoming matches.

Ravi Shastri, who coached both players during their peak years, echoed Ponting’s optimism, highlighting the respect and admiration both Kohli and Rohit command in India and globally.

Shastri noted that the players would not jeopardize their legacy, even while pushing themselves to deliver strong performances. “The contribution is over a decade, decade and a half in the case of Virat. It’s special.

Whether they finish tomorrow or the day after or whenever, that legacy will remain,” he said.

Analysts point out that both players bring tactical acumen, match-winning ability, and leadership qualities to the team, even when they are not scoring big runs.

Their presence strengthens India’s batting lineup, providing stability and confidence to younger teammates, who can look up to them for guidance in high-pressure situations.

Adelaide offers a promising opportunity for Kohli and Rohit to find their rhythm. Known for its batting-friendly conditions and sporting pitch, the venue is expected to allow both players to play freely, showcase their strengths, and contribute to India’s performance in the series.

Fans are also eager to see them back in form, as both cricketers continue to inspire the next generation of players with their technique, temperament, and commitment.

Despite the loss in Perth, India’s team remains strong overall, with a deep batting lineup, versatile bowlers, and a balanced mix of youth and experience.

The upcoming matches against Australia are an opportunity for Kohli and Rohit to reaffirm their status as match-winners, and for the team to gain momentum in preparation for future tournaments.

Ponting concluded by expressing confidence in the players’ ability to bounce back quickly. “They’ll find a way to contribute and win games for their team, and if they do that, they’ll most likely be in that World Cup team in 2027.

I’d expect to see both those guys bounce back into it pretty quickly,” he said. His comments underline the resilience, dedication, and enduring class of two of India’s greatest limited-overs cricketers.

With Adelaide and Sydney ahead, fans and teammates alike can expect exciting cricket and memorable performances from Kohli and Rohit, reinforcing why they are regarded among the finest batsmen in the history of Indian cricket.
