SINGAPORE- Iran’s Revolutionary Guards fired warning shots at two vessels attempting to cross the Strait of Hormuz on Monday, according to Iranian state television, as tensions between Tehran and Washington intensified over control of the strategically vital waterway and commercial shipping through the passage declined.

State television reported that the two ships were attempting to cross the strait illegally when they were intercepted. A correspondent stationed near the waterway said the vessels were targeted with warning shots fired by the Revolutionary Guards’ navy and were subsequently stopped.

Iran’s Revolutionary Guards later said their naval forces had halted the two ships during the previous night by shutting down their onboard systems. The Guards did not identify the vessels or provide additional details about their cargo, ownership or destination.

The latest incident comes as maritime traffic through the Strait of Hormuz has fallen sharply amid renewed military confrontation between the United States and Iran and growing security concerns following attacks on shipping in the region.

Ship-tracking data from Kpler showed that only six vessels transited the strait on Sunday, the lowest daily figure recorded in five weeks.

According to the data, outbound traffic included the Very Large Crude Carrier Humanity, carrying approximately 2 million barrels of Iranian crude oil, and the tanker Capetan Andreas, transporting around 500,000 barrels of Kuwaiti refined oil products. Three empty tankers entered the Gulf to load crude, while most vessels switched off their transponders while passing through the narrow waterway.

The tracking data also showed no liquefied natural gas tankers entering the Strait of Hormuz over the weekend that were visible on commercial monitoring systems.

One tanker operated by the Abu Dhabi National Oil Co. exited the strait between July 10 and July 12 and is bound for Dahej port in India, according to Kpler.

The maritime developments coincided with another round of U.S. military operations against Iran. U.S. Central Command said American forces carried out strikes on Sunday against dozens of targets at multiple locations using precision-guided munitions.

President Donald Trump said on Sunday that the Strait of Hormuz remained open to commercial navigation. His remarks followed Iran’s earlier declaration that it had closed the strategic passage after a vessel traveling on what Tehran described as an unauthorized route was struck.

The Strait of Hormuz connects the Gulf with the Gulf of Oman and the Arabian Sea and is one of the world’s most important maritime chokepoints, handling a significant share of global seaborne oil exports. Any disruption to shipping through the passage has the potential to affect international energy markets and global trade.

Neither Iranian authorities nor U.S. officials reported any injuries or damage resulting from Monday’s reported warning shots, and there was no immediate independent confirmation of the incident.
