Makkah – A growing humanitarian effort in Saudi Arabia is reshaping the lives of amputees through comprehensive medical, psychological and social support.

The initiative, led by the Baitureh Health Association for the Care of Amputees, has created a powerful model of rehabilitation rooted in compassion, innovation and community involvement.

Established in 2020, the organization was formed to address rising cases of amputation linked to accidents, medical conditions and workplace injuries.

Its mission focuses on helping individuals regain independence, rebuild confidence and reintegrate into daily life with dignity and strength.

The initiative provides a full cycle of care, offering assessments, family counseling, physical rehabilitation and customized prosthetic fittings.

Its leadership emphasizes that service integration, rather than fragmentation, is key to restoring a sense of wholeness and stability for beneficiaries.

Psychological support is a fundamental pillar of the program, with group sessions led by trained mentors who have personally experienced limb loss.

These mentors provide emotional understanding, helping patients navigate fear, trauma and uncertainty through shared experiences and guidance.

Field visits enhance this support system, giving patients reassurance both before and after surgery.

This personal connection eases emotional transitions and prepares individuals for rehabilitation with greater confidence.

More than 1,000 people across Saudi Arabia have benefited from the association’s efforts so far, including a significant number of children.

Young patients receive specialized attention, as they require more intensive emotional support, family involvement and regular prosthetic adjustments due to growth.

The organization runs programs such as My First Step and Therapeutic Entertainment, which help children adapt to prosthetics in safe, playful environments.

These programs reduce anxiety, build self-esteem and help young amputees embrace movement and mobility at their own pace.

The association has completed over 300 prosthetic fittings, offering a wide range of advanced options from silicone cosmetic limbs to hydraulic, mechanical, electronic and 3D-printed models.

Each prosthetic is selected based on lifestyle, age, activity level and psychological readiness, ensuring personalized and effective rehabilitation.

Prosthetic limbs can be expensive, costing from a few thousand dollars to more than seventy thousand depending on the model and technology.

To make these services accessible, the association relies on sponsorships, community participation and strategic partnerships that reduce the financial burden for families.

Despite its progress, challenges remain, including limited access to psychological therapy resources and a shortage of specialized experts.

The association has responded by establishing a rehabilitation center designed to localize prosthetic production, reduce costs and speed up the fitting process.

This center also creates training opportunities for future professionals, helping build a skilled local workforce capable of advancing research, manufacturing and patient support.

By investing in talent and technology, the initiative aims to secure long-term sustainability and continuous improvement in rehabilitation services.

For the association, providing prosthetics is only part of the mission.

Its deeper purpose lies in restoring hope, enabling independence and rebuilding lives through empathy, innovation and sustained care.

The initiative stands today as one of the country’s most transformative humanitarian efforts, offering amputees not just new limbs, but renewed confidence and the chance to move forward with strength.

Its work reflects a broader vision of community solidarity, medical excellence and the belief that every individual deserves dignity, mobility and a future full of possibility.

Riyadh – KSrelief’s long-term commitment to supporting people with disabilities reflects a growing vision for a world where compassion, equity, and opportunity guide development.

Its work highlights how humanitarian action and social responsibility can come together to improve lives on a global scale.

Since its establishment, the organization has implemented seventy-eight specialized projects across countries including Yemen, Syria, Sudan, Jordan, Somalia, Poland, Tunisia, Senegal, Lebanon, and Turkiye.

These initiatives have reached communities facing conflict, displacement, and limited access to essential health and rehabilitation services.

With a value exceeding $64 million, the programs offer medical support, physical rehabilitation, and assistive devices designed to restore mobility, independence, and social participation.

This reflects a deeper recognition that disability inclusion must be woven into every aspect of humanitarian planning.

KSrelief’s efforts demonstrate that empowering persons with disabilities is not merely a charitable act but a developmental necessity that strengthens entire societies.

Ensuring access to education, healthcare, training, and employment uplifts both individuals and the communities they belong to.

In many regions where health infrastructure is fragile, the organization’s rehabilitation centers provide continuous care for children and adults who would otherwise be left without essential support.

This includes physiotherapy, prosthetics, hearing devices, and mobility aids that allow people to reclaim their confidence and autonomy.

The programs also focus on social integration by encouraging participation in schools, local activities, and community life.

This helps break social barriers and promotes a culture where diversity is not only accepted but valued.

Disability should never be seen as an obstacle but as a part of the rich human experience that deserves recognition and respect.

KSrelief’s initiatives help shift public understanding toward a view where talent, creativity, and resilience define individuals more than their physical limitations.

By investing in capacity-building projects, the organization supports caregivers, educators, and medical teams who play a critical role in long-term rehabilitation.

Empowering these local systems ensures sustainability even after immediate humanitarian needs are met.

The philosophy behind these programs emphasizes dignity, fairness, and shared responsibility.

Every device provided and every training session delivered contributes to building a more inclusive global future.

As integration programs expand, communities benefit from broader participation and the creativity that emerges when more voices are included.

This creates a ripple effect, strengthening economic opportunities and social stability.

Empowering people with disabilities reinforces the belief that humanitarian work must be comprehensive and forward-looking.

It is a commitment rooted in compassion and guided by the conviction that every individual deserves a chance to thrive.

The impact of these projects serves as a reminder that inclusive development is essential for lasting peace, growth, and community resilience.

Through dedicated efforts, the path toward a more accessible and just world becomes clearer and more achievable.

KSrelief’s work stands as a meaningful example of how targeted support can transform challenges into opportunities for progress.

By opening doors, restoring hope, and promoting equality, these programs continue to inspire a broader global movement toward inclusion.

Jeddah – Saudi Arabia marked the second UN World Conjoined Twins Day on Nov. 24 by highlighting more than three decades of medical and humanitarian achievements through the Saudi Conjoined Twins Program.

The initiative has become one of the world’s most comprehensive efforts supporting children born with complex congenital conditions.

Since its launch in 1990, the program has assessed 152 cases from 28 countries across five continents, providing advanced medical expertise to families who often lack access to specialized care.

Through the support of national leadership, the program has earned global recognition for both its medical outcomes and its commitment to humanitarian values.

A total of 67 separation surgeries have been performed at King Abdulaziz Medical City, with each procedure delivered at no cost to the families involved.

The program covers every aspect of care, including surgery, rehabilitation, travel, accommodation and family support, ensuring that children receive treatment in a stable and compassionate environment.

This year’s observance emphasized the importance of inclusive health systems and the global responsibility to support children with disabilities.

Saudi Arabia’s engagement in the UN-recognized day reflects its broader commitment to medical outreach through KSrelief, the Kingdom’s international humanitarian aid agency.

KSrelief organized an international conference to mark more than 30 years of the program’s achievements, bringing together medical specialists, policymakers and humanitarian experts.

The event focused on strengthening international cooperation, improving long-term post-surgery support and advancing research on conjoined twins worldwide.

During the conference, new agreements were signed to expand access to integrated services after separation surgeries.

These agreements cover healthcare follow-up, educational support and social services in the children’s home countries, ensuring that families receive continuing assistance beyond the operating room.

A dedicated data platform was also introduced to track long-term outcomes and enhance global understanding of conjoined twin cases.

This effort will support coordinated care, facilitate research and ensure that best practices can be shared across international medical communities.

Additional partnerships were concluded with Imperial College London and Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children in the UK.
The collaborations aim to advance research, promote knowledge exchange and strengthen the global registry of conjoined twin cases.

Another agreement was signed with the Ministry of Defense’s Aeromedical Evacuation Department to support specialized medical transport for critical cases.

This ensures that infants requiring urgent care can be transported safely and efficiently from their home countries to Saudi Arabia.

To commemorate the UN day, KSrelief joined UNICEF and the Permanent Mission of Saudi Arabia to the UN in hosting an event under the theme “From Words to Action.”

The gathering underscored the need for inclusive healthcare, education and protection services for children with disabilities across the world.

Conjoined twins represent one of the rarest and most complex medical challenges globally, requiring highly specialized teams, advanced surgical planning and long-term rehabilitation.

Their experiences reflect the broader challenges faced by millions of children with disabilities, including limited access to medical care and barriers to full social participation.

Dr. Abdullah Al-Rabeeah, head of the program, emphasized that the initiative demonstrates the impact of expertise guided by compassion.

He noted that the program aims to give every child a chance at a healthier and more dignified life, regardless of their background or circumstances.

Al-Rabeeah said that global partnerships are essential to improving outcomes for children with complex medical needs.

He reaffirmed the shared commitment with UNICEF to ensure that disabilities never stand in the way of a child receiving proper care and support.

As Saudi Arabia continues to expand its humanitarian medical programs, the Conjoined Twins Program remains a leading example of how long-term commitment and international cooperation can transform individual lives.

Its achievements serve as a model for other nations seeking to advance inclusive healthcare and strengthen support for vulnerable children worldwide.

New data shows increasing acknowledgment and inclusivity for law students with disabilities, marking a positive step toward mental health advocacy

New data shows increasing acknowledgment and inclusivity for law students with disabilities, marking a positive step toward mental health advocacy in legal education.

A new nationwide survey has revealed that one in five law students in the United States identifies as having a disability, with most conditions linked to mental health challenges such as anxiety, depression, and attention-deficit disorders.

This growing openness among students reflects a broader cultural shift within legal education—one that encourages self-identification, awareness, and acceptance of mental health as a vital aspect of overall well-being.

The Law School Survey of Student Engagement, conducted by Indiana University’s Center for Postsecondary Research, gathered insights from nearly 12,000 law students across 62 institutions.

The findings offer a comprehensive understanding of how law schools are evolving to address the needs of students with disabilities and mental health conditions.

It is also an encouraging sign that more students feel comfortable acknowledging their challenges, paving the way for improved institutional support systems and mental health programs.

According to the report, 57% of law students with disabilities experience anxiety, 55% live with attention-deficit or hyperactivity disorders, and 41% face depression.

Notably, 83% of all disabled law students reported at least one mental health or developmental condition, while 12% had a physical disability.

These statistics underscore the prevalence of mental health struggles within law school environments, but also highlight a growing recognition of these issues and the need for compassionate academic practices.

Law schools have begun to take proactive steps to foster inclusivity and provide better emotional and academic support.

While the survey found that disabled students reported lower satisfaction levels with counseling and career advising compared to their non-disabled peers, the increased participation of disabled students in clinics, pro bono initiatives, and student organizations demonstrates their active engagement and resilience.

This indicates a shift toward practical and community-based learning experiences that emphasize empathy, collaboration, and service.

The report’s director, Southwestern Law professor Meera Deo, noted that the data shows disabled law students are “missing necessary institutional support,” but the visibility of such issues is an essential starting point for progress.

With more law schools acknowledging these concerns, conversations about accessibility, mentorship, and inclusive education are becoming integral parts of the academic landscape.

Encouragingly, the survey also revealed that 62% of students with disabilities believe their law schools provide sufficient academic support to help them succeed—an important step toward closing the gap with their non-disabled peers, 70% of whom expressed similar satisfaction.

This growing parity suggests that institutions are beginning to adapt and enhance their support mechanisms to create fairer and more understanding learning environments.

Law schools are increasingly implementing programs to address student mental health, including peer mentorship initiatives, dedicated counseling services, and stress management workshops.

Many institutions are also promoting greater dialogue about disability and inclusion, recognizing that these discussions help normalize mental health challenges and encourage students to seek help without fear of stigma.

This positive shift also extends beyond academia. As future lawyers, judges, and policymakers, law students with disabilities bring valuable perspectives on empathy, advocacy, and equity—qualities essential to a just legal system.

Their visibility and contributions are transforming the traditional image of legal education, making it more diverse and representative of the communities it serves.

The increasing openness around disability and mental health among law students marks a hopeful transition in higher education.

It reflects a generation that values authenticity, self-awareness, and collective support. Institutions now have the opportunity to build on this momentum by ensuring equal access to resources, expanding counseling infrastructure, and integrating well-being into the core of legal education.

The findings of this year’s survey represent not only a statistical revelation but a human story—one of courage, honesty, and progress.

As more law students come forward about their experiences with mental health and disability, the legal community is moving toward a more inclusive and supportive future, one where success is measured not just by academic performance, but by resilience, balance, and empathy.

Dammam — King Fahd International Airport in Dammam has taken a major step toward inclusive and accessible travel with the opening of a new sensory room designed to support passengers with disabilities, autism, and sensory sensitivities.

Developed in collaboration with Saudi Aramco and the King Salman Center for Disability Research, the facility represents Saudi Arabia’s growing commitment to improving travel experiences for all.

Located within the airport’s departure terminal, the sensory room provides a calming and carefully controlled environment that helps reduce sensory overload for travelers.

The space is equipped with adjustable lighting, sound, color, and tactile elements, all tailored to meet individual needs. It serves both children and adults, ensuring that travelers of all ages can find comfort and stability before boarding their flights.

The facility is operated by a multidisciplinary team trained in behavioral and sensory support, reflecting a thoughtful approach that goes beyond infrastructure to prioritize emotional and psychological well-being.

The initiative builds on the success of a similar sensory room launched at Riyadh’s King Khalid International Airport in 2021, which has received wide praise from families and accessibility advocates.

At the inauguration ceremony, Prince Sultan bin Salman — a long-time advocate for disability inclusion — praised the project as a symbol of compassion and collaboration. “This sensory room represents a model of partnership that reflects Saudi Arabia’s humanitarian values,” he said. “The Kingdom continues to invest in programs that empower individuals and ensure they enjoy equal access to public spaces.”

Prince Sultan also announced that a similar facility will soon open at Jeddah’s King Abdulaziz International Airport, signaling a nationwide push toward creating more inclusive travel infrastructure.

Parents who attended the event expressed heartfelt gratitude. Rana Al-Qahtani, mother of a child with autism, described the initiative as life-changing. “For the first time, I can travel with my son without fearing sensory overload,” she said. “This space gives families like ours peace of mind.”

Another parent, Faisal Al-Mutairi, said the new room “sends a message that our children belong everywhere.” He added: “Seeing this at an international airport makes us feel truly seen and respected.”

The initiative was equally praised by corporate partners. Nabil Al-Jama’, executive vice president for Human Resources and Corporate Services at Saudi Aramco, said: “Aramco is proud to support initiatives that foster inclusion and social harmony. These sensory rooms remind us that accessibility and empathy must guide development.”

From the airport’s perspective, Dammam Airports Co. CEO Mohammed Al-Hassani emphasized that inclusivity lies at the heart of the company’s mission.

“The sensory room reflects our long-term commitment to ensuring comfort, dignity, and equality in travel,” he said. “This initiative aligns with Vision 2030’s Quality of Life Program, which seeks to enhance accessibility in public facilities across the Kingdom.”

Kholoud Al-Shaya, adviser to Prince Sultan and director of the project, explained that the decision to expand the initiative came after overwhelmingly positive feedback from families using the Riyadh facility.

“The emotional and behavioral improvements we witnessed over the past four years prove that inclusive design is not optional — it’s essential,” she said.

Beyond the sensory room, Dammam Airports Co. has announced SR500 million ($133 million) worth of new development contracts and three strategic agreements with civil-society organizations to promote sustainability, recycling, and the training and empowerment of persons with disabilities.

These agreements further reinforce the company’s role in advancing the broader Vision 2030 goals of community engagement, environmental stewardship, and social responsibility.

The opening of the sensory room at Dammam airport marks a turning point in Saudi Arabia’s journey toward inclusive travel. It not only demonstrates the Kingdom’s commitment to accessibility but also serves as a model for other international airports to follow.

By blending innovation with compassion, and policy with purpose, Saudi Arabia is redefining what it means to travel with dignity — one inclusive step at a time.
