Kyiv-Russian strikes killed four people and wounded at least 10 others in Ukraine’s northeastern Kharkiv region early on Tuesday, regional

Kyiv-Russian strikes killed four people and wounded at least 10 others in Ukraine’s northeastern Kharkiv region early on Tuesday, regional officials said, as intensified cross-border attacks continued to inflict civilian casualties more than four years after Moscow launched its full-scale invasion.

Kharkiv regional governor Oleg Synegubov said Russian forces struck the city of Chuguiv overnight, killing four people, including a 22-year-old woman, and causing extensive damage to residential areas.“The enemy has hit the city of Chuguiv,” Synegubov wrote on Telegram, adding that the attack sparked fires, damaged at least 18 vehicles and shattered windows in multi-story apartment buildings.

Separately, Kharkiv Mayor Igor Terekhov said 10 people were wounded in strikes on the regional capital, one of Ukraine’s most heavily targeted cities because of its proximity to the Russian border. The latest attacks come amid a sustained escalation in aerial warfare between Russia and Ukraine.

Russian missile and drone strikes have intensified in recent months, while Kyiv has expanded its own long-range drone operations against targets deep inside Russian territory, saying those attacks are primarily aimed at military and energy infrastructure supporting Moscow’s war effort.

Kharkiv region has remained a focal point of the conflict, with repeated attacks on civilian and industrial facilities despite international calls for greater protection of non-combatants.According to United Nations estimates published in April, at least 15,850 civilians have been killed in areas under Ukrainian control since Russia’s invasion began in February 2022. The UN said more than 2,800 civilians have also been killed in Russian-controlled territories.

The organization reported that more than 44,800 people have been wounded across Ukrainian-controlled and Russian-occupied areas since the start of the war.

Neither Russia nor Ukraine has shown signs of easing military operations, with both sides continuing regular drone and missile attacks as fighting persists along multiple sectors of the front line.

Washington-The United States military said it destroyed two Iranian attack drones over the Strait of Hormuz on Saturday after identifying

Washington-The United States military said it destroyed two Iranian attack drones over the Strait of Hormuz on Saturday after identifying them as threats to international shipping, marking the latest escalation in a rapidly intensifying confrontation between Washington and Tehran across the Gulf region.

U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) said American forces operating in the Middle East intercepted the drones before they could threaten maritime traffic moving through one of the world’s most strategically important energy corridors.

“Earlier today, U.S. forces in the Middle East shot down two Iranian one-way attack drones that threatened international maritime traffic in the Strait of Hormuz,” CENTCOM said in a statement posted on X, adding that U.S. forces remained prepared to defend against what it described as Iranian aggression.

The incident followed another military exchange less than 24 hours earlier. CENTCOM said on Friday that American forces had shot down four Iranian attack drones launched toward the strait before conducting retaliatory strikes against Iranian coastal surveillance radar sites.

The latest actions underscore the growing risk to commercial navigation through the Strait of Hormuz, a critical maritime chokepoint connecting the Persian Gulf with global energy markets. Any disruption to shipping in the narrow waterway has the potential to affect international trade flows and energy supplies.

Saturday’s drone interceptions came amid a broader deterioration in regional security conditions. Earlier in the day, Iran launched missiles toward Bahrain and Kuwait, according to reports cited by regional officials, expanding the geographical scope of hostilities and drawing renewed concern from Gulf states.

The exchanges represent the latest chapter in an escalating conflict between the United States and Iran, even as both sides continue indirect diplomatic contacts aimed at exploring possible pathways toward ending the confrontation.

The juxtaposition of military operations and ongoing negotiations highlights the complexity of the current crisis, with diplomatic engagement proceeding alongside repeated battlefield escalations.

Neither Tehran nor Washington has indicated any immediate willingness to scale back military activities, raising concerns among regional governments and international shipping operators that further incidents in and around the Strait of Hormuz could increase tensions and heighten risks to maritime security.

The latest drone interceptions reinforce the central role of the waterway in the broader U.S.-Iran confrontation, as both sides continue to test each other’s military capabilities while seeking leverage in parallel diplomatic discussions.

Beirut-Lebanon remains committed to negotiations with Israel and will not use force to disarm Hezbollah, a Lebanese official said on Monday, as Israel expanded military operations in southern Lebanon ahead of a new round of U.S.-backed talks in Washington.

The escalation follows Israel’s capture of the strategic Beaufort Castle position, raising concerns that military gains on the ground could strengthen its negotiating position.

Lebanese officials said Beirut had rejected Israeli calls for the Lebanese army to immediately disarm Hezbollah, warning such a move could trigger internal instability.

Lebanese military sources said control of Beaufort Castle could give Israeli forces greater surveillance and operational reach across parts of southern Lebanon.

The United Nations Security Council is expected to discuss the situation at an emergency meeting requested by France.

Beirut-Lebanon marked Resistance and Liberation Day on Monday under the shadow of renewed Israeli military strikes and ongoing displacement in the country’s south, with political leaders urging solidarity with conflict-affected communities rather than traditional celebrations of the anniversary commemorating Israel’s 2000 withdrawal from southern Lebanon.

The national holiday marks May 25, 2000, when Israeli forces ended a 22-year presence in southern Lebanon following years of conflict. This year’s commemoration came amid continuing hostilities along the Israeli-Lebanese border, prompting Lebanese officials to emphasize the unresolved security situation in the south.

Prime Minister Nawaf Salam said the anniversary should serve as a moment of national solidarity with families affected by the ongoing conflict, including those who have lost relatives, been wounded, displaced or remain in frontline communities.

In a statement posted on social media, Salam said Lebanon would reserve celebrations until Israeli forces had fully withdrawn from Lebanese territory and displaced residents could safely return to their homes.
President Joseph Aoun described the 2000 withdrawal as the result of sacrifices made by residents of southern Lebanon, calling the anniversary a symbol of national dignity.

He said, however, that the occasion was being observed amid continued military operations in southern villages and what he characterized as ongoing violations of international resolutions, including United Nations Security Council Resolution 1701.

Aoun reiterated Lebanon’s commitment to securing a complete Israeli withdrawal through diplomatic negotiations while emphasizing the role of the Lebanese state and armed forces in safeguarding national sovereignty.

The statements came as tensions remained elevated in southern Lebanon. Residents of 10 villages were ordered to evacuate on Monday as bombardments continued and concerns mounted over a broader escalation along the border region.

According to Lebanon’s Health Ministry, Israeli airstrikes on Sunday killed at least 18 people and wounded 21 others. The ministry said the cumulative death toll linked to the conflict had reached 3,151.

The anniversary has long held symbolic significance in Lebanon’s modern history, marking the end of Israel’s military presence in most of southern Lebanon after more than two decades. This year, however, the observance reflected the extent to which renewed cross-border hostilities have reshaped the country’s political and security landscape.

Lebanese leaders used the occasion to underscore both the legacy of the 2000 withdrawal and the challenges posed by the current conflict, as military operations and civilian displacement continue to affect communities across the south.

Jerusalem-Two senior far-right ministers in Israel’s governing coalition on Monday called for a major escalation of military operations in Lebanon,

Jerusalem-Two senior far-right ministers in Israel’s governing coalition on Monday called for a major escalation of military operations in Lebanon, including strikes on Beirut, as fighting with Hezbollah continued despite a ceasefire and diplomatic efforts aimed at reducing tensions along the border.

National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir urged Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to resume full-scale military operations in Lebanon, arguing that current measures were insufficient to counter Hezbollah attacks.

“It is time for the prime minister to take a firm stand with Donald Trump and tell him that Israel is returning to war in Lebanon,” Ben Gvir wrote on social media, calling for expanded military action and tougher economic measures against Lebanon.

Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich also advocated a stronger response, specifically urging strikes on Beirut following Hezbollah drone attacks targeting Israeli troops and positions near the border.

“There is an urgent need to put an end to the threat posed by Hezbollah’s explosive drones,” Smotrich said on Telegram, proposing a significantly more forceful military response against targets in the Lebanese capital
Smotrich added that he had approved a special defense allocation of approximately 2 billion shekels ($692 million) to support the development of counter-drone capabilities for Israel’s security establishment.

The comments from the two ministers came after the Israeli military announced the death of another soldier in southern Lebanon, bringing the number of Israeli military fatalities since the conflict began to 23. One civilian contractor has also been killed, according to Israeli authorities.

The current round of fighting began on March 2 when Hezbollah entered the broader regional conflict following the killing of Iran’s supreme leader in joint U.S.-Israeli strikes, according to the report.

Hezbollah subsequently launched rocket attacks into Israel, prompting Israeli retaliatory operations that later expanded into a ground offensive in southern Lebanon.

Israeli forces are currently operating within a self-declared security zone extending roughly 10 kilometers inside Lebanese territory along parts of the southern border. At the same time, Israel has continued conducting airstrikes deeper inside Lebanon despite a ceasefire agreement that took effect on April 17.

Lebanon’s Health Ministry says the conflict has killed at least 3,123 people in the country since March, although official figures do not distinguish between civilians and combatants.

The growing pressure from coalition hardliners reflects increasing frustration within Israeli political circles over the effectiveness of the ceasefire. Opposition leader Yair Lapid described the truce as ineffective, arguing that continued attacks on northern Israel undermine its credibility.

“Either there is a ceasefire or we respond with disproportionate force to every attack against us,” Lapid told reporters.

The calls for escalation come as Israel and Lebanon continue participating in U.S.-mediated negotiations aimed at reducing hostilities and addressing longstanding security disputes. The two sides are expected to hold a fourth round of talks in early June.

However, prospects for a durable settlement remain uncertain. Hezbollah leader Naim Qassem has opposed the negotiations and rejected calls to disarm the group, while Hezbollah continues attacks on Israeli military targets in southern Lebanon and across the border.

The ministers’ statements underscore the growing tensions within Israel over how to handle the conflict, as military operations, diplomatic initiatives and domestic political pressures increasingly intersect in one of the region’s most volatile confrontations.

Beirut— Joseph Aoun said on Monday he would do the “impossible” to end the conflict between Lebanon and Israel, as

Beirut— Joseph Aoun said on Monday he would do the “impossible” to end the conflict between Lebanon and Israel, as cross-border hostilities continued despite a ceasefire and ongoing indirect negotiations.

Aoun’s remarks came after Israeli strikes targeted several locations in southern Lebanon and the Iran-backed armed group Hezbollah announced a drone attack on what it described as a military target in northern Israel.

“The framework that Lebanon has set for the negotiations consists of an Israeli withdrawal, a ceasefire, the deployment of the army along the border, the return of the displaced, and economic aid,” Aoun said in a statement.

“My duty, based on my position and my responsibility, is to do the impossible, and to choose what is least costly, in order to stop the war against Lebanon and its people,” he added.

The ceasefire, initially reached on April 17, was extended by 45 days last week following a third round of talks between Lebanese and Israeli representatives in Washington. Hezbollah has opposed the negotiations.

Despite the truce, violence has persisted along the border. Hezbollah said Monday it launched a drone targeting an Iron Dome air defense platform at an Israeli military encampment in northern Israel, describing the strike as retaliation for Israeli ceasefire violations.

Lebanon’s state-run National News Agency reported multiple Israeli strikes across southern Lebanon, while the Israeli military issued evacuation warnings for residents in three southern Lebanese towns.

The latest escalation followed Israeli strikes on Sunday that Lebanese authorities said killed seven people, including a member of Palestinian Islamic Jihad in northeastern Lebanon, away from the border region.

Israeli forces have maintained operations inside parts of southern Lebanon within a self-declared “yellow line” extending roughly 10 kilometers north of the border. Israeli troops have also carried out demolitions in areas under their control.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said on Sunday that Israel was confronting growing threats from first-person-view drones increasingly deployed by Hezbollah against Israeli forces.

According to Lebanese authorities, Israeli military operations have killed more than 2,900 people in Lebanon since the conflict began, including more than 400 since the ceasefire took effect in April.

Geneva- The United Nations on Tuesday condemned the growing number of Palestinian child deaths linked to Israeli military operations in the occupied West Bank, saying at least 70 children had been killed since the start of 2025.

James Elder, speaking on behalf of the UN children’s agency UNICEF in Geneva, said children were “paying an intolerable price” amid escalating violence and military activity across the West Bank, including East Jerusalem.“Between January 2025 and today, at least one Palestinian child has been killed on average every single week,” Elder told reporters.

The remarks come amid intensified Israeli military operations in several West Bank cities and refugee camps, alongside growing displacement and humanitarian concerns in the territory. The United Nations and humanitarian agencies have repeatedly warned about the impact of prolonged conflict and security operations on civilians, particularly children, in Palestinian areas.

Israel says its operations in the West Bank target armed militants and are aimed at preventing attacks against Israeli civilians and security forces.

The latest UN comments add to mounting international scrutiny over the humanitarian consequences of the conflict as violence continues across both the West Bank and Gaza.

Seoul — South Korea said on Sunday that unidentified aircraft struck a South Korean-operated cargo vessel in the Strait of Hormuz earlier this week, intensifying concerns over maritime security in one of the world’s most critical energy shipping lanes amid escalating conflict involving Iran, the United States and Israel.

South Korea’s foreign ministry said the Panama-flagged bulk carrier HMM Namu sustained significant damage after being hit twice on Monday while transiting the strategic waterway, which has faced severe disruption since the outbreak of hostilities between Israel, the United States and Iran in late February.

Foreign ministry spokesman Park Il told reporters that “two unidentified aircraft struck the outer plate of the port-side ballast tank at the stern” of the vessel at roughly one-minute intervals, igniting flames and heavy smoke.

Park said investigators had not yet determined the type, origin or size of the aircraft involved, despite CCTV footage capturing the incident. South Korean authorities are conducting further analysis of engine debris and fragments recovered from the vessel.

According to the ministry, the first strike is believed to have ignited a fire in the engine room, while the second impact accelerated the spread of the blaze. Damage to the hull extended approximately five meters across and seven meters inward on the vessel’s port-side stern.

The ship, carrying 24 crew members, later arrived at port in Dubai with visible fire damage.U.S. President Donald Trump said earlier this week that Iran had “taken some shots” at the vessel and urged South Korea to participate in U.S.-led operations intended to restore commercial shipping through the Strait of Hormuz.Iran has denied involvement.

Tehran’s embassy in Seoul issued a statement rejecting what it called allegations linking Iranian forces to the attack and said it “firmly rejects and categorically denies” responsibility.South Korea summoned Iran’s ambassador to seek clarification regarding Tehran’s position and discuss the findings of the preliminary investigation, Park said.

The Strait of Hormuz, through which roughly a fifth of global oil consumption typically passes, has become a focal point of military escalation since the United States and Israel launched coordinated strikes against Iran earlier this year.

Tehran has since responded with attacks across the region and measures that have sharply reduced maritime traffic through the corridor, fueling volatility in global energy markets.

Commercial shipping companies and insurers have increasingly rerouted vessels or suspended operations in the Gulf amid rising security risks and mounting concerns over attacks on tankers and cargo ships.

Jerusalem— The Israeli military on Saturday ordered residents of nine villages in southern Lebanon to evacuate immediately ahead of planned

Jerusalem— The Israeli military on Saturday ordered residents of nine villages in southern Lebanon to evacuate immediately ahead of planned operations against Hezbollah, despite an existing ceasefire aimed at halting cross-border hostilities.

Israeli military spokesman Avichay Adraee said the evacuation order was issued in response to what Israel described as repeated Hezbollah violations of the truce agreement that took effect in mid-April.“In light of the terrorist Hezbollah’s violation of the ceasefire agreement, the IDF is compelled to act against it forcefully,” Adraee said in a statement posted on X.Residents were instructed to leave their homes and move at least 1,000 meters away from the affected villages into open areas for their safety, the statement said.

The warning came as fighting between Israel and the Iran-backed group continued to intensify across southern Lebanon, with both sides exchanging fire almost daily despite the ceasefire arrangement.Earlier Saturday, the Israeli military said it had targeted more than 85 Hezbollah infrastructure sites over the previous 24 hours through aerial and ground operations.

According to the military, the strikes hit weapons storage facilities, missile launchers and structures allegedly used by Hezbollah to conduct attacks against Israeli civilians and soldiers.Israel also said it struck an underground Hezbollah weapons production facility in Lebanon’s Beqaa Valley and targeted militants accused of conducting operations against Israeli troops deployed in southern Lebanon.

On Friday, Hezbollah announced missile and drone attacks against Israeli military bases in retaliation for Israeli strikes on Beirut’s southern suburbs and continued attacks in southern Lebanon.Lebanese authorities said Israeli strikes killed 11 people in southern Lebanon on Friday.

The latest escalation underscores the fragility of the ceasefire reached earlier this year after months of cross-border clashes that expanded alongside the broader regional conflict involving Israel, Iran and allied armed groups.

Israel and Lebanon remain formally at war, although indirect diplomatic efforts backed by international mediators have sought to prevent wider regional escalation.
