Manila – The Asian Development Bank and the World Bank have launched two major development projects in the Pacific islands,

Manila – The Asian Development Bank and the World Bank have launched two major development projects in the Pacific islands, marking the start of a new era of collaboration designed to accelerate progress and strengthen regional resilience.

The initiatives are the first to be implemented under the Full Mutual Reliance Framework, an innovative cofinancing model that aims to simplify processes and deliver development support more efficiently.

The framework allows one institution to act as the lead lender, significantly reducing duplication and freeing up financial and human resources for on-the-ground implementation.

This streamlined approach represents a major shift in how multilateral development banks cooperate, offering a faster and more agile response to the needs of vulnerable countries.

The first project, valued at $236.5 million, focuses on transforming Fiji’s healthcare system and addressing the growing challenge of non-communicable diseases.

It includes modernising primary healthcare and developing a regional hospital that will be equipped to deliver early diagnosis, preventive care and advanced treatment.

Fiji faces one of the highest rates of non-communicable diseases in the region, with diabetes being a leading cause of death.

Health leaders say the new project will be instrumental in strengthening early detection, improving access to quality care and reducing the burden of preventable diseases.

Officials emphasized that the initiative is not only a healthcare upgrade but also a long-term investment in the well-being and productivity of Fiji’s population.

Better services, advanced medical facilities and a stronger preventive health system will support economic stability and improve quality of life.

The second project focuses on Tonga, where a $120 million grant-backed development program will upgrade essential transport, urban and water infrastructure.

It is the country’s largest project funded by international development partners and is expected to transform connectivity and strengthen disaster resilience.

Key improvements include enhancements to transport corridors around the capital Nuku’alofa and major upgrades to drainage systems that will reduce flooding risks.

A 720-meter bridge across a lagoon will ease congestion, improve daily mobility and provide a reliable evacuation route during natural disasters such as tsunamis.

Development partners noted that countries with limited administrative capacity often spend disproportionate time coordinating with lenders instead of implementing projects.

The new cofinancing approach is designed to remove these obstacles, ensuring that governments can direct more attention to executing development plans efficiently.

Leaders from both institutions highlighted that the framework aims to make cooperation more coherent, more effective and better aligned with each country’s priorities.

By eliminating duplicated processes, the model frees time, money and technical expertise that can instead be dedicated to accelerating real-world impact.

Officials also confirmed that around 20 additional projects are already in preparation under the same system, covering sectors such as clean energy, infrastructure, agribusiness and social protection.

These upcoming initiatives reflect a growing commitment to coordinated action, especially in regions that face heightened climate and economic vulnerabilities.

Multilateral development banks are exploring similar partnerships to expand the benefits of streamlined cooperation.

Discussions are underway with institutions in Europe, Latin America and Africa, signaling broader momentum toward unified global development efforts.

The launch of the Fiji and Tonga projects demonstrates that collaborative financing can significantly enhance efficiency and deliver faster, more reliable support to countries in need.

With improved healthcare, upgraded infrastructure and strengthened disaster resilience, the Pacific islands stand to see long-term benefits that will bolster stability and growth.

Moscow – Russia’s Foreign Ministry has called for restraint and respect for international law following recent United States military operations

Moscow – Russia’s Foreign Ministry has called for restraint and respect for international law following recent United States military operations in the Caribbean Sea, while reaffirming its commitment to cooperation and peaceful dialogue with nations in the region, including Venezuela.

In a statement released on Saturday, Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova noted that Russia was monitoring developments related to U.S. operations against drug trafficking in the Caribbean and eastern Pacific. She emphasized the importance of ensuring that all international efforts aimed at addressing security challenges are conducted in accordance with global norms and mutual respect among states.

“We encourage all parties to act within the framework of international law and maintain transparency and cooperation in addressing regional concerns,” Zakharova said in her remarks published on the ministry’s website.

The comments come as the United States continues its campaign in the Caribbean and eastern Pacific, aimed at countering illegal drug trade networks. The initiative includes maritime patrols, air surveillance and joint enforcement actions with partner nations.

According to reports, the U.S. presence in the region has expanded in recent months with increased deployment of naval and air assets. American officials have said the operations are part of a broader strategy to strengthen maritime security and protect regional waters from organized crime.

Russian officials, however, have expressed concern about the scale of the military presence and urged for balanced measures that contribute to long-term regional stability. Zakharova noted that Russia supports international cooperation against illicit trafficking but believes such initiatives should align with the principles of proportionality and non-interference.

“Russia values dialogue and partnership in addressing transnational threats,” she said, adding that multilateral coordination through the United Nations and regional institutions is the most effective way to achieve sustainable solutions.

The Foreign Ministry also reiterated Russia’s ongoing collaboration with Venezuela within the framework of existing bilateral agreements. Both countries have maintained regular exchanges on economic, energy and cultural initiatives. In May, President Vladimir Putin and President Nicolás Maduro met in Moscow to sign a strategic partnership plan aimed at deepening cooperation in areas such as trade, science, and technology.

Officials from both nations described the agreement as a continuation of their long-standing diplomatic relationship, focused on mutual respect and support for national sovereignty.

Analysts note that the statement from Moscow reflects Russia’s broader foreign policy approach, which emphasizes dialogue, non-intervention, and the importance of international law in maintaining global stability. Diplomatic experts said that while differing perspectives between major powers are expected, the emphasis on communication channels remains essential in avoiding misunderstandings and promoting peace.

Regional observers in Latin America have also called for continued cooperation among all stakeholders to ensure that anti-narcotics initiatives contribute to safety and development rather than heightening geopolitical tensions. Several Caribbean governments have expressed interest in maintaining balanced partnerships with both Western and Eastern powers, focusing on joint efforts in maritime security, environmental protection and economic growth.

Russia’s reaffirmation of its position comes amid a complex global security environment, with multiple regional initiatives taking place across the Americas, Europe and Asia. The Foreign Ministry underlined the need for collective responsibility in addressing transnational challenges, including organized crime, drug trafficking, and illegal maritime activities.

In closing, Zakharova stressed that Russia remains open to constructive dialogue with all nations, including the United States, to promote mutual understanding and coordination in tackling shared global threats. She said that Moscow continues to advocate for diplomacy and cooperation as the most effective means to maintain peace and stability.

“Russia supports all initiatives that aim to strengthen international security through dialogue and partnership,” Zakharova concluded. “It is through collaboration, not confrontation, that the global community can achieve lasting progress.”

Manama – Saudi Arabia reaffirmed its commitment to promoting regional dialogue, cooperation, and stability through its participation in the Manama

Manama – Saudi Arabia reaffirmed its commitment to promoting regional dialogue, cooperation, and stability through its participation in the Manama Dialogue 2025, held in the Kingdom of Bahrain.

Representing Saudi Arabia at the high-profile international security conference, Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs Waleed Al-Khuraiji attended the opening session on Saturday, where leaders, diplomats, and policy experts gathered to discuss some of the most pressing global and regional challenges.

Now in its 21st edition, the Manama Dialogue has become one of the most influential platforms for security and foreign policy discussions in the Middle East.

It provides an opportunity for world leaders, ministers, and strategists to engage in constructive dialogue, share perspectives, and explore collective solutions to achieve lasting peace, stability, and prosperity. The Kingdom’s active participation underscores its role as a leading voice for diplomacy, multilateral cooperation, and regional development.

During the conference, Al-Khuraiji emphasized Saudi Arabia’s unwavering support for dialogue and partnership as essential tools for resolving global challenges.

He highlighted that the Kingdom’s foreign policy, guided by Vision 2030, prioritizes peace, cooperation, and economic progress across the region.

He also noted that Saudi Arabia continues to work closely with its allies and international organizations to promote regional stability and encourage peaceful conflict resolution through diplomacy and dialogue.

On the sidelines of the event, Al-Khuraiji met with Anne-Claire Legendre, adviser to the French president on Middle East and North Africa affairs.

The meeting reflected the close and historic relationship between Saudi Arabia and France. Both sides discussed ways to further strengthen bilateral relations, deepen strategic cooperation, and address shared regional and international priorities.

They also reviewed recent global developments and reaffirmed their mutual commitment to stability and constructive engagement in the region.

The meeting highlighted the ongoing coordination between Riyadh and Paris in various sectors, including defense, economic investment, cultural exchange, and clean energy initiatives.

These discussions align with Saudi Arabia’s broader diplomatic strategy of fostering strong partnerships with global allies to advance common goals and sustainable development.

The Manama Dialogue featured participation from a wide range of regional and international representatives, including foreign ministers, national security advisers, and senior policymakers.

Topics of discussion included regional security architecture, international cooperation on counterterrorism, maritime security, and energy stability.

The event also emphasized the importance of diplomacy in addressing global challenges such as climate change, conflict prevention, and humanitarian relief efforts.

Saudi Arabia’s involvement in the dialogue reflects its growing role as a key player in shaping global and regional policy discussions.

Under the leadership of Crown Prince and Prime Minister Mohammed bin Salman, the Kingdom continues to champion initiatives that promote dialogue over division, stability over conflict, and development over stagnation.

In recent years, Saudi Arabia has emerged as a diplomatic hub, hosting and participating in major international conferences aimed at fostering cooperation between nations.

Its contributions extend beyond security and politics to include global humanitarian aid, sustainable energy transition, and cultural exchange.

These initiatives embody the Kingdom’s forward-looking approach, which seeks to position Saudi Arabia as a bridge between East and West, facilitating mutual understanding and collaboration.

Al-Khuraiji’s presence at the Manama Dialogue reaffirmed the Kingdom’s dedication to constructive diplomacy and partnership. His participation highlighted Saudi Arabia’s balanced and pragmatic foreign policy, which prioritizes peace, security, and economic growth not only for the Kingdom but for the entire region.

The Kingdom’s message at the conference was clear: cooperation and dialogue remain the foundation for a stable and prosperous future.

By engaging with international partners and contributing to discussions on critical issues, Saudi Arabia continues to demonstrate its leadership role in advancing peace and development in the Middle East and beyond.

The Manama Dialogue 2025 once again proved to be an important platform for building trust and strengthening relationships among nations.

For Saudi Arabia, it served as another opportunity to reaffirm its vision of a peaceful and interconnected world built on respect, collaboration, and shared prosperity.
