New York City- Denmark and Pakistan have proposed a United Nations Security Council resolution calling for stronger action against those

New York City- Denmark and Pakistan have proposed a United Nations Security Council resolution calling for stronger action against those responsible for attacks on UN peacekeepers, warning that a lack of prosecutions has weakened the safety of international personnel in conflict zones.

The draft resolution, which could be put to a vote soon, says a culture of impunity has “undermined the safety and security” of UN personnel deployed in some of the world’s most dangerous areas.

The document notes that prosecutions for crimes against peacekeepers remain rare and calls on host countries to investigate and prosecute those responsible for attacks.

The initiative comes as seven peacekeepers serving with the UN Interim Force in Lebanon have been killed since the start of the latest conflict between Israel and Hezbollah in early March. Two Malaysian members of the force were also slightly injured after an airstrike near a UN position in Tibnin caused damage from broken glass.

Denmark and Pakistan, both elected members of the Security Council, have made peacekeeping a central focus of their two-year terms. They have worked with South Korea as part of a group promoting renewed attention to UN peacekeeping issues.

The proposed resolution calls on all relevant parties to cooperate with the United Nations in identifying, investigating and prosecuting those responsible for attacks against peacekeepers.

It also urges states to take necessary measures in line with international humanitarian law and human rights obligations to ensure accountability.

The draft addresses concerns from countries that contribute troops to UN missions by calling for the appointment of a senior UN focal point to coordinate responses and encouraging affected countries to deploy trained investigators to support local investigations.

The resolution highlights growing threats against peacekeepers, including attacks involving shelling, improvised explosive devices and unmanned aerial systems.

Since 2013, at least 251 peacekeepers have been killed in the Central African Republic, the Democratic Republic of Congo and Mali through malicious acts, with few perpetrators brought to justice.

Beirut-Peacekeeper serving with the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) was killed and two others wounded after mortar shells

Beirut-Peacekeeper serving with the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) was killed and two others wounded after mortar shells struck a position in southern Lebanon, the United Nations and Serbian authorities said on Thursday.

UNIFIL said the peacekeeper died from critical injuries sustained during Wednesday night’s attack on a base located near the border area where Israeli forces and Hezbollah fighters continue to clash. The mission said an investigation had been launched and called on relevant authorities to examine the incident.

Serbia’s defense ministry identified the deceased soldier as Milovan Jovanovic, a senior sergeant who was evacuated to a medical center in Beirut after receiving emergency treatment at the base but later succumbed to his injuries.

The death raises the number of UNIFIL personnel killed since the latest round of hostilities began in March to seven. Around 170 Serbian troops serve within the 7,500-member UN force deployed along the Blue Line, the de facto border separating Lebanon and Israel.

UNIFIL said it had recorded an increasing number of projectiles and impacts across southern Lebanon and renewed calls for an end to the violence.

The peacekeeping mission has suffered multiple casualties in recent months. In March, two Indonesian peacekeepers were killed in separate incidents, while in April two French peacekeepers died in an ambush that French authorities and the UN attributed to Hezbollah, a claim the group denied.

Earlier this week, Antonio Guterres said UN peacekeepers would continue to be needed in Lebanon beyond the expiration of UNIFIL’s current mandate at the end of the year.

Jakarta— Indonesia on Friday urged the United Nations Security Council to conduct a thorough investigation into deadly incidents in southern

Jakarta— Indonesia on Friday urged the United Nations Security Council to conduct a thorough investigation into deadly incidents in southern Lebanon that killed three Indonesian peacekeepers, backing a joint statement supported by 73 countries and UN observer states.

The statement, submitted by Indonesia’s permanent representative to the United Nations, Umar Hadi, called for strengthened protection measures for peacekeeping forces amid escalating security risks. It also urged an end to violence and a return to negotiations to secure a peaceful resolution in Lebanon.

Indonesia’s Foreign Ministry said the safety of UN personnel was “non-negotiable,” stressing the need for the Security Council to use all available mechanisms to safeguard troops deployed in volatile environments.

The appeal follows a series of explosions in southern Lebanon in late March that killed three Indonesian peacekeepers serving under the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon and wounded several others, including personnel from France, Ghana, Nepal and Poland.

A separate blast inside a UN facility less than a week later injured three more Indonesian soldiers. The incidents prompted Jakarta to demand accountability and enhanced security guarantees for peacekeeping missions.

The Foreign Ministry described the attacks as “unacceptable” and called for an urgent meeting of troop-contributing countries to review safety protocols and operational conditions within UNIFIL.

President Prabowo Subianto condemned the attacks, saying such acts undermine peace efforts and result in the loss of lives of Indonesian personnel deployed abroad.

The UNIFIL mission, established to monitor hostilities and support stability in southern Lebanon, operates in a region that has seen renewed tensions in recent weeks, raising concerns over the safety of international peacekeepers.

Beirut — An Indonesian peacekeeper serving with United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon was killed and another critically injured after a projectile exploded at a UN position near Adchit al-Qusayr, the mission said on Monday, as hostilities continue along the Israel-Lebanon frontier.

UNIFIL said the blast occurred on Sunday and that it had launched an investigation to determine the origin of the projectile. “We do not know the origin of the projectile,” the mission said, adding that emergency response teams were deployed.

Indonesia’s foreign ministry confirmed the fatality involved one of its nationals and said three other Indonesian peacekeepers were injured by indirect artillery fire near their position.

Jakarta condemned the incident, calling any harm to peacekeepers unacceptable, and reiterated its criticism of Israeli military actions in southern Lebanon.

Rising risks for UN forcesUNIFIL operates in southern Lebanon to monitor hostilities along the demarcation line with Israel, where clashes between Israeli forces and Iran-backed Hezbollah fighters have intensified in recent weeks.

The mission has increasingly been caught in crossfire. Earlier this month, Ghana said two of its peacekeepers were critically injured after a UN position was struck. Israel later acknowledged its tank fire had hit the site while responding to anti-tank missiles from Hezbollah.

The escalation follows Hezbollah rocket fire into Israel on March 2, which triggered a new Israeli offensive in southern Lebanon amid a wider regional conflict involving Iran.

UNIFIL urged all parties to adhere to international law and avoid actions that endanger UN personnel and facilities.
