Mexico City — A Canadian woman was killed and 13 people were injured on Monday when a gunman opened fire

Mexico City — A Canadian woman was killed and 13 people were injured on Monday when a gunman opened fire at the Teotihuacan archaeological site, one of the country’s most visited pre-Hispanic landmarks, before taking his own life, authorities said.

The attack occurred around midday at the historic complex in central Mexico, where the assailant fired from the Pyramid of the Moon, a major monument within the site.

Cristobal Castaneda, security secretary for Mexico state, said the gunman’s nationality was not immediately known and confirmed that he died by suicide at the scene.Six people sustained gunshot wounds and were treated in local hospitals, including a Canadian woman, a Colombian woman and child, a Brazilian national and two Americans, officials said.

Seven others were injured during the panic that followed and received treatment at the site, among them a Russian, a Colombian, a Brazilian and four Americans.Authorities recovered a firearm, a knife and unused ammunition, and evacuated visitors as police and National Guard units secured the area.

Video footage circulating on social media showed the attacker firing intermittently from partway up the pyramid as tourists fled or sought cover, though the material has not been independently verified.Canadian Foreign Minister Anita Anand described the incident as “a horrific act of gun violence” in a post on X.

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum said she had ordered a thorough investigation and deployed personnel to assist those affected, calling the incident deeply distressing.Located about 50 kilometers from Mexico City, Teotihuacan draws millions of domestic and international visitors annually to its ancient pyramids and ceremonial avenues.

Tourism officials said the site attracted more than 1.8 million visitors in 2025.The shooting comes less than two months before the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which Mexico is set to co-host alongside the United States and Canada, with authorities expecting more than 5.5 million visitors during the tournament.

Mexico has long grappled with high levels of criminal violence linked to organized crime, though mass shootings targeting tourists at major archaeological sites are rare.

Officials said investigations are ongoing to determine the motive and circumstances of the attack.

SHREVEPORT — A man shot dead eight children, including seven of his own, in a domestic violence attack in Shreveport

SHREVEPORT — A man shot dead eight children, including seven of his own, in a domestic violence attack in Shreveport before dying following a police pursuit, authorities said, in one of the deadliest mass shootings in the United States in two years.Police identified the shooter as Shamar Elkins, who opened fire at two homes before dawn on Sunday.

The victims, three boys and five girls aged between three and 11, were killed in what officials described as a domestic incident linked to a marital separation.Elkins’ wife, Shaneiqua Elkins, and her sister were wounded in the attack, while other family members escaped.

Authorities said Elkins died after fleeing the scene, though it remains unclear whether he was shot by police or died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Caddo Parish Sheriff Henry Whitehorn said the killings had shaken the community, prompting calls for stronger measures to address domestic violence. Schools in the area brought in counselors to support students affected by the incident.Family members said the couple had been in the process of separating and were due in court on Monday. Relatives described the children as well cared for and central to their mother’s life.

Authorities said Elkins had a prior felony conviction for illegal use of a weapon in 2019, which legally barred him from possessing firearms for a period after completing his sentence.

Investigators are examining how he obtained the weapon used in the attack.Police said there was no known recent history of domestic violence involving Elkins, though he had briefly checked into a Department of Veterans Affairs hospital earlier this year, according to relatives.

The violence unfolded across two locations, with Elkins first shooting a woman in one neighborhood before targeting the home where the children were killed. One child who died was identified by local officials as his nephew.

The shooting is the deadliest in the United States since January 2024, according to data compiled by The Associated Press in partnership with USA Today and Northeastern University.

Community members gathered for vigils late Sunday, leaving flowers, candles and toys near the scene as local leaders called for renewed efforts to prevent domestic violence and gun-related tragedies.

Hong Kong — Thousands of residents displaced by Hong Kong’s deadliest fire in decades began returning on Monday to their

Hong Kong — Thousands of residents displaced by Hong Kong’s deadliest fire in decades began returning on Monday to their damaged apartments in Tai Po for the first time since a November blaze killed 168 people and destroyed large parts of a residential complex, as authorities continue to investigate the cause of the disaster.

The fire, which spread across seven of eight buildings in the Wang Fuk Court complex, displaced roughly 4,600 residents, many of whom have since been living in temporary housing across the city. Officials have allowed controlled access for residents to inspect their homes and recover belongings, with visits scheduled through early May.

Among those returning is 78-year-old Keung Mak, who lived in his apartment for more than four decades. He said he expected to find little remaining after seeing photographs of severe structural damage, including exposed steel reinforcement and debris-strewn floors. His wife, Kit Chan, said most personal items of sentimental value, including family photographs and letters, were likely destroyed.

Authorities have imposed strict limits on access due to safety concerns, typically allowing up to four people per unit for a maximum of three hours, with further restrictions in severely damaged apartments. Many buildings remain structurally compromised, with elevators out of service, posing challenges for elderly residents, who accounted for over one-third of the complex’s population before the fire.

Local officials said more than 1,400 of those registered to return are aged 65 or older. Some residents have undertaken physical preparation to climb stairs in high-rise buildings, where access remains limited.Investigations into the cause of the fire are ongoing.

A lawyer involved in an independent inquiry has indicated that most fire safety systems in the complex failed on the day of the incident due to human error, though authorities have yet to release final findings.Residents have reported ongoing psychological distress, with some describing difficulty sleeping and persistent anxiety months after the event.

Others expressed concern about the condition of their properties and the risk of theft following reports of looting, which led to arrests earlier this year. The Hong Kong government has signaled that demolishing the heavily damaged buildings may be more viable than repairs and has proposed buying back ownership rights from affected residents.

The proposal has drawn mixed responses, with some residents questioning whether less-damaged units could be restored. For others, the emotional toll remains a key factor in decisions about resettlement. Some residents from the only building that escaped the fire have indicated reluctance to return, citing ongoing trauma and the proximity to the site where neighbors and acquaintances died.

Authorities have said further decisions on reconstruction and compensation will depend on the outcome of structural assessments and the final investigation report.

Riyadh — Saudi Arabia’s civil defense authorities urged residents to exercise caution as thunderstorms, heavy rainfall and strong winds are forecast to affect large parts of the country through Friday, raising risks of flash floods and reduced visibility.

The General Directorate of Civil Defense said the warning was based on projections from the National Center for Meteorology, which expects moderate to heavy rainfall across regions including Makkah, Riyadh, Madinah, Qassim, Hail, Tabuk, the Eastern Province, Northern Borders, Al-Jouf, Al-Baha, Asir, Jazan and Najran.

Authorities said the unstable weather could trigger flash flooding, hailstorms and strong downdrafts capable of generating dust storms that may significantly reduce visibility. In response, Hafar Al-Batin University suspended in-person classes on Monday, shifting to remote learning in its main campus and affiliated colleges in Khafji and Al-Nairyah following meteorological advisories.

The civil defense agency advised residents to remain in safe locations, avoid flood-prone areas and refrain from entering valleys or swimming in affected zones, while monitoring official updates. The warnings follow a series of escalating alerts issued over the weekend, including a red alert for the Madinah region, where forecasters predicted intense rainfall, hail and near-zero visibility conditions.

Weather authorities said the system developed over northern and western regions on Saturday before expanding into central and eastern areas on Sunday, bringing widespread rain and dust-laden winds.

Officials said they continue to monitor the situation closely as adverse weather conditions persist, urging the public to prioritize safety precautions.

Kuala Lumpur — A pre-dawn fire tore through a coastal settlement in Sabah on Borneo, destroying about 1,000 homes and

Kuala Lumpur — A pre-dawn fire tore through a coastal settlement in Sabah on Borneo, destroying about 1,000 homes and displacing more than 9,000 residents in the Sandakan district early Sunday, authorities said, with strong winds and tightly packed housing accelerating the blaze.

Fire and rescue officials said they were alerted at around 1:32 a.m., as flames spread rapidly across one of Sabah’s water villages, where houses built on stilts stand in close proximity. District fire chief Jimmy Lagung said weather conditions and structural density contributed to the speed of the fire, while low tide hindered access to open water sources for firefighting operations.

Police in Sandakan said no fatalities had been reported, though thousands of residents were affected and forced to evacuate as the fire engulfed large sections of the settlement. The affected communities include some of Malaysia’s most vulnerable populations, with many residents living in informal housing and lacking secure access to public services.

Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim said the federal government was coordinating with state authorities to deliver immediate relief, including basic necessities and temporary shelter for displaced residents. He said ensuring the safety of those affected and providing rapid assistance remained the government’s priority.

Water villages in Sabah are particularly susceptible to fire outbreaks due to their wooden construction, high density and limited infrastructure, factors that can complicate emergency response efforts and increase the scale of damage once fires take hold.

Ankara— A 14-year-old student shot dead nine people, including eight fellow pupils and a teacher, and wounded 13 others at a middle school in southeastern Turkey on Wednesday, officials said, marking the country’s second school shooting in two days.

The attack took place in the province of Kahramanmaras, where Interior Minister Mustafa Ciftci said six of the injured were in critical condition. Authorities ruled out terrorism, describing the incident as a personal act carried out by a student.

“This was solely a personal attack carried out by one of our students, it is not a terror incident,” Ciftci told reporters.

Governor Mukerrem Unluer said the attacker, an eighth-grade pupil, entered two classrooms of younger students armed with five firearms and seven magazines, which authorities believe belonged to his former police officer father.

The suspect later killed himself during the incident, the governor added. The shooting targeted fifth-grade students, typically aged 10 to 11, and caused casualties “indiscriminately,” Unluer said.

The attack follows another school shooting a day earlier in Sanliurfa that left 16 people injured, raising concerns over school safety in a country where such incidents are rare.Officials said the suspect’s father had been detained as part of the investigation.

Turkey has relatively strict gun laws, requiring licenses and setting a minimum age of 21 for legal ownership, though firearms remain accessible, particularly among security personnel permitted to carry weapons.

Authorities said they would consider additional safety measures following the incidents but did not provide further details.

Wellington— Authorities in New Zealand issued evacuation orders in parts of the North Island on Saturday as Cyclone Vaianu approached, with forecasters warning of potential flooding in Auckland.

The storm is expected to bring heavy rainfall and winds of up to 130 km/h (80 mph), raising concerns about flooding and damage in the country’s most populous urban area. Weather officials said the system is likely to make its closest approach on Sunday.

Cyclone Vaianu is then forecast to track west of the Chatham Islands on Monday, though its impact could still be felt across parts of the region.

Emergency authorities have urged residents in vulnerable areas to follow evacuation instructions and prepare for severe weather conditions as the storm system intensifies.

Washington — The FBI warned U.S. law enforcement agencies last month of a “persistent threat” posed by Iran to targets

Washington — The FBI warned U.S. law enforcement agencies last month of a “persistent threat” posed by Iran to targets inside the United States, even as the White House publicly downplayed the likelihood of such attacks, according to an intelligence report reviewed by Reuters.

The March 20 report, issued by the FBI and other federal agencies, said Iran’s government posed an elevated risk to U.S. military and government personnel, Jewish and Israeli institutions, and Iranian dissidents within the United States.

It added that while no broad threat to the general public had been identified, the potential for targeted attacks remained significant.President Donald Trump had publicly minimized the risk of Iranian retaliation on U.S. soil in recent months.

When asked on March 11 whether he was concerned about a possible attack, Trump said he was not. His rhetoric shifted this week, however, as tensions escalated, including a warning that “a whole civilization will die tonight” before he agreed to delay military action and accept a two-week ceasefire.

The intelligence document, titled “Public Safety Awareness Report,” was released weeks after reports that the White House had blocked a similar product from being made public. At the time, officials said the move was to ensure information was properly vetted.

White House spokeswoman Abigail Jackson said the administration remained focused on protecting national security and cautioned against drawing conclusions from individual law enforcement documents without broader context.

The FBI and National Counterterrorism Center did not immediately respond to requests for comment, while a spokesperson for Iran’s mission to the United Nations declined to comment.

The report, obtained through public records requests by the nonprofit Property of the People, warned of “elevated physical threats” following the outbreak of conflict. It said Iranian security services had previously attempted kidnappings and killings targeting Americans, using methods ranging from firearms to more covert tactics such as poisoning, arson and suffocation.

According to the report, Iranian operatives often rely on individuals with legal status or access within the United States and have used digital tools including social media monitoring, livestreams and mapping applications to identify and surveil potential targets. It also cited the use of cyber tactics such as phishing campaigns.

The report further warned that Iran has attempted to lure individuals to third countries closer to its territory, “almost certainly for kidnapping and eventual executions.”U.S. public opinion has remained cautious about the conflict, with a Reuters/Ipsos poll last month showing that roughly two-thirds of Americans favor ending U.S. involvement quickly, underscoring the sensitivity surrounding threat assessments and policy responses.

Law enforcement agencies were urged to remain vigilant and coordinate closely with federal authorities on any emerging threats.

Dubai— Authorities in Dubai said no injuries were reported on Saturday after debris from an aerial interception struck the facade of a building in the emirate’s Internet City, amid heightened regional tensions linked to the Iran conflict.

The Dubai Media Office said the incident involved fragments falling on an Oracle building following defensive action against an aerial threat.

“Authorities confirm that they responded to a minor incident caused by debris from an aerial interception.

No injuries were reported,” it said in a statement on X.Officials also reported a similar incident in Dubai Marina, where debris fell on a building facade without causing injuries or fire.

Oracle had previously been listed among 18 U.S. firms that Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps warned could be targeted in retaliation for attacks on the country.

Elsewhere in the United Arab Emirates, authorities said an Egyptian national was killed and four others sustained minor injuries after debris from an intercepted strike fell on gas facilities in Habshan, in the emirate of Abu Dhabi, on Friday.

A further 12 people were injured in a separate debris incident in Ajban, officials said.In Bahrain, the interior ministry reported that four citizens sustained minor injuries after shrapnel from intercepted drones struck residential areas in Sitra, damaging several homes. Emergency and civil defense teams were deployed to the site.

The incidents highlight the spillover risks of ongoing hostilities in the region, as air defense interceptions increasingly result in debris falling across civilian areas in Gulf states.

Melbourne— Australian police on Saturday arrested two people in northeast Victoria as part of an investigation into how fugitive Desmond

Melbourne— Australian police on Saturday arrested two people in northeast Victoria as part of an investigation into how fugitive Desmond Freeman evaded capture for seven months after killing two police officers, authorities said.

Freeman, 56, was shot dead by police on Monday at a remote property in northern Victoria, bringing to an end an extensive manhunt that began in August last year when he fled into dense bushland following the fatal shooting of two officers at his rural home.

Victoria Police said a man and a woman were detained at separate properties on Saturday morning and would be questioned over potential assistance provided to the fugitive during his time on the run.

“The investigation remains ongoing and as such, we are not in a position to provide further details at this immediate time,” police said in a statement.

Authorities had deployed significant resources in the search for Freeman, who was accused of killing 59-year-old detective Neal Thompson and 35-year-old senior constable Vadim De Waart when officers attended his property.

A third officer was wounded in the lower body during the incident.

Victoria Police Chief Commissioner Mike Bush earlier described the operation as one of the most resource-intensive in Australian policing history, adding investigators believed Freeman may have relied on local support to remain concealed.

“It would be very difficult for him to get to where he was without assistance,” Bush said following Freeman’s death.

The arrests mark the latest development in the investigation into the circumstances that enabled Freeman to evade authorities for months despite a large-scale coordinated search across rural Victoria.
