The violence erupted after supporters of the Joint Awami Action Committee (JAAC), a movement advocating economic and governance reforms, pressed ahead with planned demonstrations despite being outlawed by authorities under anti-terrorism legislation.

Sardar Waheed, the top civilian official in Rawalakot, said three civilians were killed and about 40 others wounded during the clashes.

Police said four officers were also killed and 23 injured, bringing the overall death toll to seven.

Authorities moved against the organization over the weekend, sealing its central office and imposing restrictions on large public gatherings in Muzaffarabad, the largest city in Pakistan-administered Kashmir.

Police confirmed that more than 70 JAAC members were arrested during operations carried out ahead of the planned protests.

Despite fears of wider unrest, markets in Muzaffarabad reopened on Monday under a heavy security presence. Residents had earlier rushed to stockpile supplies amid concerns that demonstrations and possible shutdowns would disrupt daily life.

JAAC leaders rejected the government’s decision to classify the group as a terrorist organization, describing the move as political repression and insisting their campaign is focused on legitimate demands for economic relief, political accountability and governance reforms.

The latest confrontation follows a similar wave of unrest in September, when protests led by the group triggered days of clashes that left nine people dead.

Pakistan-administered Kashmir has witnessed periodic demonstrations in recent years over inflation, electricity costs, governance issues and demands for greater political representation.

The Himalayan region of Kashmir remains one of South Asia’s most sensitive territorial disputes. Both India and Pakistan claim the region in full but administer separate portions following their partition and independence from British rule in 1947.

In commentary carried by state media, analyst Kim Myong Chol said the statement demonstrated that the United States intended to use South Korea as a geopolitical tool in its regional competition with China. He accused Washington of undermining peace and stability in the region.

Brunson made the remarks in a recent interview, where he also described Japan as a “shield” against China’s regional ambitions. The comments have drawn criticism from both North Korea and China.

South Korea’s presidential office said it was aware of the remarks and remained in communication with Washington on related issues. Local media reported that Seoul had conveyed concerns to U.S. officials.

The United States maintains about 28,500 troops in South Korea as part of its long-standing security alliance aimed at deterring threats from nuclear-armed North Korea.

In an interview published Wednesday, Trump said Iran had already agreed not to pursue a nuclear weapon and suggested Khamenei was directly involved in discussions with the United States.

“I would like to meet him, and we probably will meet at some point, depending on how it all works out,” Trump said.

The comments come as the United States and Iran seek to build on a fragile ceasefire following weeks of regional tensions and military exchanges.

Trump also acknowledged a tense conversation with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu over the conflict in Lebanon, saying he was “a little bit perturbed” by Israel’s continued military actions there.

Despite the disagreement, Trump said he maintained a strong relationship with Netanyahu and emphasized that the two leaders continue to get along well.

The remarks highlight Washington’s efforts to advance diplomacy with Iran while simultaneously pressing for de-escalation in ongoing regional conflicts involving Israel and Hezbollah.

The ministry said the ambulance belonged to the Risala Scouts Association, affiliated with the Amal movement, a Hezbollah ally. Images released by the ministry showed the vehicle heavily damaged at the scene.

Lebanese authorities said at least 130 emergency and health workers have been killed since the Israel-Hezbollah conflict escalated in March.

The Israeli military said warning sirens were activated following the suspected aerial incursion but provided no immediate details on the origin of the aircraft or whether it had been intercepted.

The alert came hours after Lebanon announced a limited ceasefire arrangement aimed at reducing hostilities between Israel and the Iran-backed Hezbollah movement.

According to Lebanon’s embassy in Washington, the agreement calls for Israel to halt strikes on Hezbollah-controlled southern suburbs of Beirut while Hezbollah suspends attacks on Israeli territory. The arrangement does not constitute a full ceasefire and does not end the broader conflict.

The latest security alert underscores continued tensions along the Israel-Lebanon front despite diplomatic efforts to contain the fighting, which has intensified alongside wider regional instability linked to the conflict involving Iran, the United States and Israel.

The two-day meeting at the U.S. State Department brings together Israeli Ambassador Yechiel Leiter, Lebanese envoy Nada Hamadeh Moawad and senior U.S. diplomat Daniel Holler. No statements were made as the talks began.

The discussions follow U.S. President Donald Trump’s announcement that both sides had agreed to de-escalate, though fighting has continued along the Israel-Lebanon border.

Israel said it would keep targeting Hezbollah strongholds in Beirut’s southern suburbs if attacks on northern Israeli communities persist.

The talks come amid a sharp escalation in hostilities, with Israeli forces conducting their deepest incursion into Lebanon in years. Lebanon’s health ministry said Israeli strikes near a hospital in Tyre on Monday killed four people and wounded 127 others.

Kuwaiti air defenses intercepted missiles and drones as warning sirens sounded across the country. Kuwait said the attacks violated international law and undermined efforts to reduce regional tensions.

Saudi Arabia, the UAE and the Gulf Cooperation Council also condemned the strikes, expressing support for Kuwait.

Meanwhile, Iran’s Revolutionary Guards said they had targeted an air base allegedly used in a U.S. attack on Sirik Island, without identifying the location of the facility.

As Muslims marked Eid Al-Adha, Basharat stood on the Pakistani-administered side of the Neelum River, looking toward the burial site of his elder brother, Raja Liaqat, in the Indian-administered village of Keran. The river forms part of the heavily militarized Line of Control (LoC), the de facto frontier dividing the disputed Himalayan region.

Liaqat died in April, and although his grave is only a short distance away, Basharat said security restrictions and political tensions made it impossible for him to visit.

“Eid is a festival of joy and celebration, but for us it has become a symbol of grief, sorrow and helplessness,” Basharat said.

The story reflects a broader reality for thousands of Kashmiri families separated by one of the world’s most sensitive military boundaries. Since the partition of British India in 1947, India and Pakistan have both claimed Kashmir in full while administering separate portions of the territory.

The 740-kilometer Line of Control cuts through mountains, forests and villages, dividing communities and relatives who often live within sight of one another but are unable to meet.

For decades, residents on both sides of the frontier maintained limited personal connections by gathering along riverbanks and hillsides to exchange greetings and catch glimpses of loved ones. “This river is visible to everyone today, but in reality it has not only divided two countries — it has torn families apart as well,” said Laiba Raja, a niece of Raja Liaqat.

“On Eid, people visit their loved ones and celebrate with family, but where are we supposed to go?” she added.

The emotional burden of separation has intensified amid deteriorating relations between India and Pakistan. Tensions worsened sharply last year following an attack in Indian-administered Kashmir that killed 26 people, most of them Hindu tourists, triggering the most serious confrontation between the nuclear-armed neighbors in years.

The fallout has further reduced opportunities for cross-border contact, according to residents and refugee representatives.

Uzair Ahmed, who heads a Kashmiri refugee organization in Pakistan-administered Kashmir, said approximately 48,000 refugees currently live in camps and urban areas across Pakistan after leaving their homes over the decades of conflict.

Many continue to hope that political conditions will eventually allow families to reunite, he said.

As dusk settles over Keran, residents can still see homes and fields across the river, a reminder of relatives living just beyond the frontier. Children play near the water while military positions overlook the valley from both sides.

“Our elders passed away waiting for that day,” Ahmed said, referring to the prospect of families embracing again, attending weddings together or paying final respects to loved ones.

“Now a new generation is growing up with the same hope.”

The statement by Kataeb Hezbollah security chief Abu Mujahid Al-Assaf comes amid heightened tensions following the outbreak of the U.S.-Israeli war on Iran in late February, a conflict that triggered a series of drone and rocket attacks by factions operating under the banner of the Islamic Resistance in Iraq against U.S. interests in the country.

Washington responded with strikes on facilities and bases linked to the groups, including Kataeb Hezbollah, killing dozens of fighters, according to the organization and regional media reports.

Since assuming office in mid-May, Iraqi Prime Minister Ali Al-Zaidi has pledged to ensure that weapons remain exclusively in the hands of the state, a longstanding objective of successive Iraqi governments seeking to strengthen state authority and limit the influence of armed non-state actors.

In a statement issued on Saturday, Al-Assaf said “militant action is today a collective duty, and we will carry it out on behalf of the brothers who have decided to abandon it,” signaling that the group intends to continue its activities even as some allied factions move toward closer cooperation with state institutions.

While several Iran-backed factions have reportedly agreed to operate under official structures, Kataeb Hezbollah remains among the groups rejecting discussions on disarmament under what it characterizes as U.S. pressure.

Al-Assaf indicated that the organization was prepared to coordinate with other factions that no longer wished to maintain independent arsenals. He said Kataeb Hezbollah could supervise the transfer and storage of weapons and receive specialized systems, including cruise missiles, arguing that state agencies lacked personnel with the necessary expertise to manage such equipment.

The group has consistently linked any discussion of its weapons to the continued presence of foreign troops in Iraq. Kataeb Hezbollah maintains that it will not consider disarmament while international forces remain deployed in Iraq’s northern Kurdistan region as part of the U.S.-led coalition established in 2014 to combat Islamic State militants.

The coalition is scheduled to conclude its mission in the Kurdistan region by September, a timeline that has become a key reference point in Iraq’s debate over the future role of armed factions and the country’s security architecture.

In an initial statement, the military reported that warning sirens had sounded in the area of Sasa and surrounding communities after systems detected what was believed to be a hostile aircraft entering Israeli airspace.

Following an assessment, the military said the alert had been caused by a mistaken identification and that no hostile aerial object had entered the area.
“The sirens warning of a hostile aircraft infiltration were determined to have been a false identification,” the military said in a statement.

No injuries or damage were reported.

The incident occurred as Israel remains on heightened alert due to continuing regional security tensions linked to the ongoing conflict involving Iran and recent missile and drone activity across the region.

False alarms have become increasingly sensitive security events as Israeli air-defense and early-warning systems operate under elevated readiness conditions amid concerns over potential aerial threats, including drones, missiles and other unmanned platforms.
