Riyadh – Saudi Arabia has extended its condolences to Turkiye following a tragic military plane crash in eastern Georgia that claimed the lives of 20 Turkish soldiers.

The Saudi Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued a statement on Wednesday evening expressing the Kingdom’s sympathy and solidarity with the government and people of Turkiye during this difficult time.

According to the statement reported by the Saudi Press Agency, Saudi Arabia conveyed heartfelt condolences to the families of the victims and wished a swift recovery for any injured personnel. The message underscored the Kingdom’s support for Turkiye and its people in the aftermath of the tragedy.

Ankara confirmed that a Turkish Air Force C-130 military transport aircraft crashed in Georgia’s Sighnaghi municipality, near the Azerbaijani border, while en route from Azerbaijan to Turkiye. Officials said the incident occurred during a routine flight, and all 20 soldiers on board were killed.

The crash represents the deadliest incident involving Turkish military personnel since 2020, when 33 soldiers lost their lives during combat operations in Syria. The latest accident has sparked an outpouring of condolences from countries around the world, including Saudi Arabia, which emphasized its deep sorrow over the loss of lives.

Turkish authorities said investigations are underway to determine the cause of the crash. Preliminary reports suggest that poor weather conditions and possible technical failures may have contributed to the accident, though officials have not yet issued a final statement.

Rescue teams and investigators were immediately deployed to the crash site, located in a mountainous area of eastern Georgia. Local emergency services worked alongside Turkish officials to recover bodies and secure the wreckage of the aircraft.

The Georgian authorities also expressed condolences and pledged full cooperation with Turkish investigators. The crash has prompted discussions on regional air safety and the risks faced by military personnel operating across international routes.

Saudi Arabia’s gesture of solidarity reflects its commitment to supporting allied and friendly nations during humanitarian crises. The Kingdom has often been among the first to offer condolences and humanitarian assistance following natural disasters and tragic events affecting partner countries.

The Saudi Ministry of Foreign Affairs reiterated that the Kingdom stands with Turkiye during this moment of grief, reaffirming the strong ties between the two nations. Relations between Riyadh and Ankara have strengthened in recent years through mutual cooperation in diplomacy, trade, and regional security initiatives.

Turkiye’s Ministry of National Defense announced that national mourning would be observed for the fallen soldiers, and flags were flown at half-mast across military institutions. A formal investigation team, including representatives from the Air Force and aviation safety units, has been tasked with reviewing the flight’s maintenance records and operational data.

The C-130 aircraft, commonly used for transport and logistics operations, has a long history of service in many countries’ military fleets. Turkish defense officials stated that the plane was undergoing a scheduled return flight when communication with ground control was lost shortly before the crash.

International condolences have poured in from various governments and organizations, recognizing the sacrifices of the Turkish military personnel who died in service. Saudi Arabia’s message of support joins those from global partners who have expressed their sympathies and shared in Turkiye’s mourning.

The incident highlights the dangers faced by military service members during transport and training missions, emphasizing the need for enhanced safety measures and modernized aircraft systems to prevent similar tragedies.

As Turkiye holds memorial ceremonies for the victims, global attention remains focused on the investigation and the country’s response efforts. Saudi Arabia’s expression of compassion and unity underscores the enduring partnership and mutual respect between the two nations.

Riyadh — Saudi Arabia’s leadership joined the people of Kenya and the African continent in mourning the passing of former Kenyan Prime Minister Raila Odinga, who passed away at the age of 80 during a health visit to India.

The gesture from the Kingdom’s leaders reflects the deep respect and friendship between Saudi Arabia and Kenya, and the shared values of solidarity, compassion, and statesmanship that unite both nations.

King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud and Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman sent heartfelt cables of condolences to Kenyan President William Samoei Ruto, expressing their sincere sympathy to the people and government of Kenya and to Odinga’s grieving family.

The Saudi leaders offered prayers for the late statesman’s soul and wished comfort and strength to all who mourn him.

King Salman, in his message, praised Odinga as “a man of vision and courage whose contributions to Kenya’s democratic and national development will always be remembered.”

Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman echoed these sentiments, highlighting Odinga’s enduring legacy as a unifying figure and a voice for justice and progress in Africa.

The Saudi leadership’s condolences came as Kenya entered a seven-day period of national mourning, declared by President Ruto, who described Odinga as “Kenya’s foremost statesman and one of Africa’s greatest sons.”

During this period, flags across the country are being flown at half-mast, and preparations are underway for a state funeral to honor the life and service of the veteran leader.

Raila Odinga’s passing marks the end of an era for Kenya and for African politics. Known for his unwavering dedication to democracy, social justice, and national unity, Odinga’s political journey spanned more than four decades.

He was admired both at home and abroad for his commitment to peace and his belief in dialogue over division.

From his time as a reform activist to his years serving as Prime Minister from 2008 to 2013, Odinga remained a strong advocate for the rights of ordinary citizens.

He played a crucial role in guiding Kenya through difficult political transitions and was instrumental in the implementation of the 2010 Constitution, which reshaped the country’s governance and strengthened democratic institutions.

His leadership extended beyond politics. Odinga was known for his efforts to promote education, youth empowerment, and cross-cultural cooperation.

His warm relationships with global leaders reflected his deep understanding of diplomacy and his vision of Africa as a continent of opportunity and unity.

Saudi Arabia’s message of condolence underscores the Kingdom’s longstanding friendship with Kenya and its recognition of the country’s importance as a pillar of stability in East Africa.

Over the years, Saudi Arabia and Kenya have strengthened their ties through trade, investment, and cooperation in areas such as energy, education, and pilgrimage facilitation for Kenyan Muslims traveling to Makkah and Madinah.

The Kingdom’s outreach during this moment of sorrow demonstrates its commitment to supporting nations in both triumph and tragedy.

It also reflects the Islamic values of compassion and brotherhood that guide the Saudi leadership’s approach to international relations.

The Saudi Ambassador to Kenya also conveyed personal condolences on behalf of the Saudi people, noting that Odinga’s contributions to Kenya’s progress and his efforts to build bridges across communities were qualities deeply respected in the Kingdom.

Odinga’s legacy resonates not only in Kenya but across Africa and the Arab world. He was seen as a bridge-builder between regions and a champion of African self-determination.

His collaboration with leaders from across the Middle East and the Gulf reflected his vision for greater cooperation between Africa and the Arab world — a goal that aligns closely with Saudi Arabia’s own efforts to strengthen ties with African nations under Vision 2030.

Through their messages, King Salman and Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman emphasized the importance of celebrating Odinga’s achievements and continuing his mission of peace, justice, and development.

Their condolences highlight the respect Saudi Arabia holds for leaders who dedicate their lives to the service of their people and to the advancement of humanity.

As Kenya prepares for a state funeral, tributes continue to pour in from around the world. Leaders, diplomats, and citizens alike remember Raila Odinga not only as a politician but as a symbol of endurance, unity, and hope.

His influence transcended borders, inspiring generations to believe in the power of democracy and the strength of national identity.

For Kenya, Odinga’s passing is a profound loss. But as President Ruto remarked, “his ideas and his love for Kenya will live forever.”

For Saudi Arabia, the Kingdom’s message of condolence represents more than diplomatic courtesy — it is a heartfelt acknowledgment of a life that made a difference.

It is a reminder that leadership, when guided by integrity and compassion, leaves behind a legacy that time cannot erase.

Riyadh – After five years of exemplary diplomatic service, Clive Aquilina Spagnol, the outgoing ambassador of Malta to Saudi Arabia,

Riyadh – After five years of exemplary diplomatic service, Clive Aquilina Spagnol, the outgoing ambassador of Malta to Saudi Arabia, has concluded his official post, but his journey in the Kingdom is far from over.

The ambassador has chosen to continue living in Saudi Arabia, calling it his “newfound home” and expressing deep admiration for the culture, people, and opportunities the country offers.

Spagnol arrived in Saudi Arabia in November 2020, during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic. Despite the challenging circumstances, he embraced the Kingdom with enthusiasm, determined to explore its rich culture, language, and traditions.

“I want to learn about Saudi Arabia, about Saudi people. I want to go through the walls, see how they work and see how they live, what they think, and discover that they think beautifully, they are open-minded, they traveled the world,” he said, reflecting his genuine curiosity and respect for the nation.

Throughout his tenure, the ambassador focused on deepening and realigning the diplomatic and economic cooperation between Saudi Arabia and Malta. He identified key market opportunities in sectors such as manufacturing and education, helping both countries better understand each other’s potential for collaboration.

“Diplomatic cooperation started decades ago, and they were active or modestly active in the ’80s. For the past six to seven years, the engagement has improved a lot,” Spagnol noted, highlighting the sustained growth in bilateral relations during his term.

One notable aspect of his work was balancing his role as both ambassador and consul. While consular duties are often viewed as administrative, Spagnol found tremendous personal and professional fulfillment in engaging directly with Saudi families.

“Through the consular work, you meet families, you meet beautiful families, you have a lot of contact with the real Saudis. That’s what made me make a lot of friends,” he explained. His approach allowed him to forge lifelong friendships and a deep personal connection to the Kingdom, beyond formal diplomatic networks.

Spagnol also dedicated time to exploring Saudi Arabia extensively, venturing beyond major cities like Riyadh, Jeddah, and Dammam to regions such as Najran, Jouf, and Tabuk, often being the first Maltese diplomat to visit these areas.

By documenting his travels, he encouraged tourism and cultural exchange, helping showcase Saudi Arabia’s diverse landscapes and heritage to a global audience. “Saudi tourism is also increasing to Malta and vice versa,” he said, emphasizing the positive impact of cultural diplomacy on mutual understanding.

The ambassador’s immersion in local life extended to cultural and recreational experiences. He spent time camping in the desert with Saudi families and participating in traditional activities, demonstrating a genuine interest in and respect for the Kingdom’s customs. “I am proud of it … I am staying in Saudi Arabia, I am not moving out of the Kingdom. I decided to make this place my home. It exceeded my expectations,” he said.

Spagnol’s commitment to the Gulf region is reinforced by over a decade of experience in countries such as Qatar, the UAE, and Oman, bringing a wealth of regional insight to his role in Saudi Arabia.

His tenure has been marked not only by professional achievements but also by meaningful personal connections and cultural engagement, leaving a lasting legacy for Maltese-Saudi relations.

As he concludes his official mission, Clive Aquilina Spagnol’s story stands as a testament to the power of diplomacy rooted in respect, curiosity, and cultural immersion. His decision to make Saudi Arabia his home reflects the enduring bonds formed during his service and the opportunities the Kingdom offers for international cooperation, personal growth, and cultural exchange.
