London – Saudi Arabia’s vast desert night skies are emerging as one of the world’s most captivating destinations for astronomy

London – Saudi Arabia’s vast desert night skies are emerging as one of the world’s most captivating destinations for astronomy lovers, drawing visitors who seek unspoiled celestial beauty and a deeper connection with ancient Arabian sky traditions.

The Kingdom’s renewed focus on astronomy and cultural tourism is helping preserve centuries-old knowledge while creating modern opportunities for exploration.

Within living memory, desert travelers and sailors depended on star patterns to navigate Arabia’s wide landscapes.

Today, that heritage is being revived as stargazing becomes central to the Kingdom’s cultural revival and its ambition to offer world-class tourism experiences rooted in science, nature, and history.

The region once inspired great astronomical innovation during the Golden Age of Islam, when scholars mapped the heavens and named many stars still recognized worldwide.

Arabic-origin terms such as azimuth, nadir, Aldebaran, and Altair reflect this enduring legacy and illustrate the deep historical bond between Arabia and the night sky.

In northwestern Saudi Arabia, this ancient fascination is being brought back to life through the development of AlUla Manara, an upcoming landmark designed to blend celestial heritage with cutting-edge science.

Planned near the archaeological wonders of Hegra, it will provide a gateway where visitors can explore astronomical research, interactive exhibits, high-tech telescopes, and atmospheric stargazing zones.

The facility is envisioned as a space where the mysteries of the universe unfold in a setting shaped by desert silence and sweeping rock formations.

With immersive workshops and sky observation platforms, AlUla Manara aims to transform stargazing into a cultural and educational journey.

AlUla’s natural conditions already make it a coveted destination for astrotourism, with its surrounding reserves recently designated as an International Dark Sky Park.

This recognition highlights the region’s exceptional clarity, environmental protection measures, and long-term conservation efforts to safeguard naturally dark skies.

Covering more than 2,300 sq. km, these skies allow travelers to witness stars as vividly as ancient caravans once did, free from modern light pollution.

Visitors experience panoramas where the Milky Way stretches across the horizon and constellations glow with remarkable intensity.

The expansion of astrotourism has also strengthened appreciation for land-based heritage, from Nabataean archaeological sites to towering sandstone formations.

These landscapes create a dual experience where Earth’s history and cosmic views complement each other in harmonious balance.

Tourists are already arriving for guided night outings where Bedouin storytelling blends with astronomy lessons under the desert sky.

These experiences celebrate cultural traditions while introducing newcomers to celestial navigation and desert folklore.

Saudi astronomer Nawal Al-Anazi, a pioneer in the field, has expressed excitement about the merging of astronomy and tourism.

She notes that the Kingdom’s deserts offer some of the clearest skies in the world, ideal for both telescopic observation and naked-eye stargazing.

Her passion for the stars began in childhood desert trips, where learning constellations was part of family outings.

Today she encourages new stargazers to travel at least 100 kilometers away from cities to escape light pollution and fully enjoy the celestial view.

Winter months from October to March provide the best stargazing conditions due to cooler temperatures and clear air.

Mobile apps such as Stellarium or Skyview help visitors identify stars, planets, and passing satellites as they explore the heavens.

As AlUla Manara develops, excitement continues to grow around Saudi Arabia’s role as a rising destination for cultural astronomy.

The Kingdom’s combination of natural beauty, historical heritage, and scientific innovation is creating a new global hub for sky enthusiasts.

Riyadh – The Diriyah Season has returned with great enthusiasm, shining a spotlight on Saudi Arabia’s deep pride in its cultural roots and national identity.

The season, themed “Ezek we Malfak” (Your Glory and Refuge), launched on Thursday along the beautiful banks of Wadi Safar in western Diriyah, marking another significant celebration of heritage, creativity, and unity.

The theme reflects Diriyah’s enduring legacy as the birthplace of the first Saudi state and a symbol of the Kingdom’s strength, culture, and history.

Organized by the Diriyah Gate Development Authority (DGDA), the opening ceremony was attended by Prince Fahd bin Saad bin Abdullah bin Turki, Governor of Diriyah, along with several cultural and media figures from Saudi Arabia and abroad.

The evening was brought to life with artistic performances inspired by the spirit of “Al-Awja,” a term deeply linked to Diriyah’s identity and the pride of the Saudi people.

Through captivating visual displays, advanced lighting, and drone shows, the story of Wadi Hanifa was beautifully told in a performance titled “I Am Al-Awja,” which left the audience inspired and emotional.

Adding to the evening’s charm, the winners of the “Rawi Al-Diriyah” (Narrator of Diriyah) program, Tamim Al-Harthi and Bader Al-Harbi, delivered interactive performances that reflected the profound connection between Saudis and their national heritage.

Their presentations, blending storytelling, music, and tradition, symbolized the deep emotional bond that unites the people of Saudi Arabia with Diriyah — the land where their nation’s story began.

The celebration also featured musical and theatrical performances showcasing Saudi folk traditions, including the Ardah and Samri dances.

These performances highlighted the diversity of Najdi culture and celebrated the artistic spirit of young Saudis, both men and women, who are keeping their heritage alive through creativity and performance.

Ahlam Al-Thunayan, director of Diriyah Season, explained that this year’s theme aims to celebrate Diriyah’s history, values, and culture in innovative ways that reflect the pride Saudis take in their roots.

She emphasized that the symbolism of Al-Awja represents the Kingdom’s continuity — linking the past with the present while inspiring future generations to preserve their cultural identity.

The season features more than 10 diverse programs over 120 days, ranging from cultural and artistic events to historical exhibitions.

Highlights include the “Hal Al-Qusour” program in the Al-Turaif district, where several historical palaces will be opened to the public for the first time, and the “Teen” program, which showcases traditional Najdi architecture.

Other attractions include the “Diriyah Novel Festival” in Al-Bujairi and “Diriyah Nights,” which bring together Saudi culinary art and international dining experiences in a lively and elegant setting.

The “Season Market” in Al-Tawali recreates the charm of old Arabian souqs, while Al-Dhuwairah district will host interactive family activities and craft workshops. Visitors can also enjoy luxury hospitality experiences with scenic views over Wadi Safar, merging modern leisure with historical elegance.

According to the DGDA, all programs are guided by principles of cultural sustainability, empowering local talents and artisans, and fostering partnerships that strengthen cultural tourism in line with Saudi Vision 2030.

The goal is to position Diriyah as a living museum — a place where the past and present merge seamlessly to inspire the future.

Nasser Al-Gharbi, chairman of the Economic Families Association, praised the Diriyah Season as a shining example of how culture and community development can work together.

He noted that the season reflects Vision 2030’s objectives by empowering local communities and creating sustainable economic opportunities through cultural engagement.

Dr. Abdulmohsen Al-Sheikh of the Saudi Economic Association highlighted that initiatives like the Diriyah Season help strengthen local economies, create jobs, and encourage regional investment — all key goals under Vision 2030.

The Diriyah Season ultimately stands as a proud tribute to Saudi Arabia’s rich heritage, creativity, and unity. By blending tradition with innovation, the festival transforms Diriyah into a vibrant cultural hub that connects generations.

It serves as a reminder that the Kingdom’s strength lies not only in its progress but also in its deep respect for its history and identity — values that continue to guide its journey toward a bright and sustainable future.

Riyadh – Blending heritage and innovation, the Royal Diriyah Opera House redefines Saudi Arabia’s artistic future — honoring Najdi tradition while embracing modern design and global collaboration.

Rising from the heart of historic Diriyah, the Royal Diriyah Opera House is set to become one of Saudi Arabia’s most inspiring cultural landmarks. Designed by Norwegian firm Snohetta in collaboration with Saudi Arabia’s Syn Architects, it reflects the harmony between desert-inspired tradition and modern creativity.

Set to open in 2028, the 46,000-square-meter venue will feature world-class performance spaces for more than 3,500 people. A 2,000-seat main theatre will host operas and global productions, while two smaller halls and a 450-seat rooftop amphitheater will support diverse cultural events in both indoor and open-air settings.

The project, led by Diriyah Company and operated by the Royal Commission for Riyadh City, is part of the larger Diriyah master plan. It aligns with Saudi Vision 2030, transforming the historic birthplace of the Kingdom into a vibrant cultural and global arts destination. Construction began before summer 2025 and continues to progress steadily.

Snohetta’s winning design was chosen in a 2022 international competition for its deep connection to the local environment. Inspired by Najdi architecture, the structure uses natural textures, shaded walkways, and open courtyards that mirror the desert landscape while ensuring sustainability and comfort.

The opera house’s interior will celebrate Saudi creativity. Installations by renowned local artists like Maha Malluh will pay tribute to the country’s visual heritage, blending tradition with modern expression and giving a platform to homegrown talent.

Architect Eli Synnevag emphasized that the project symbolizes how culture can unite communities and inspire the future. It represents a bridge between Saudi traditions and international art, reflecting the Kingdom’s growing influence in global culture and design.

Beyond architecture, the project’s purpose is deeply human — to create a space where people gather to experience music, theatre, and art in harmony with the landscape. Open gardens and connected spaces will welcome both residents and visitors, encouraging exploration and dialogue.

As the Royal Diriyah Opera House rises from the desert, it stands as a beacon of Saudi Arabia’s transformation. It embodies a new era where heritage and innovation coexist, illuminating the path toward a creative, confident, and globally connected cultural future.

Riyadh – In a major step toward empowering Saudi citizens and advancing national development goals, Saudi Arabia has unveiled new

Riyadh – In a major step toward empowering Saudi citizens and advancing national development goals, Saudi Arabia has unveiled new localization policies for the tourism sector.

Approved by Minister of Tourism Ahmed Al-Khateeb, the reforms aim to expand employment opportunities for Saudi nationals, elevate service quality, and build a sustainable, citizen-driven tourism industry in alignment with Saudi Vision 2030.

The Ministry of Tourism announced that all hospitality and tourism establishments across the Kingdom are now required to have at least one Saudi receptionist present during working hours.

This initiative underscores the government’s commitment to providing meaningful employment opportunities for citizens while ensuring that visitors experience authentic Saudi hospitality.

In addition, the new measures emphasize greater transparency and accountability in employment practices. All tourism facilities must now register their employees with the Ministry of Human Resources and Social Development (MHRSD) before they begin work.

Employment contracts—whether contractual, seconded, or seasonal—must be documented via the Ajeer platform or other officially approved government systems.

This ensures fair labor practices, legal compliance, and greater job security for Saudi workers.

To further streamline operations, establishments with multiple licensed branches are required to link each employee to the specific tourism facility where they work.

This approach prevents duplication, improves workforce tracking, and supports better management of Saudization targets.

The policy also introduces stricter rules against outsourcing or transferring Saudization-designated positions to foreign workers or unlicensed entities.

Instead, such roles must be assigned to establishments accredited by the Ministry of Tourism or licensed to employ Saudis through the MHRSD.

This not only protects job opportunities for local citizens but also enhances the professionalism and accountability of the sector’s workforce.

The ministry has made it clear that compliance with these new regulations will be closely monitored. Non-compliant establishments may face penalties, reflecting the Kingdom’s determination to create a fair and transparent employment environment.

According to the ministry, the introduction of these policies represents a significant milestone in strengthening the Kingdom’s tourism industry, which has been identified as one of the key growth sectors under Vision 2030.

The localization initiative not only boosts national employment but also contributes to improving the overall service experience for tourists from around the world.

By promoting local participation, the ministry aims to foster a new generation of skilled Saudi professionals across various fields—ranging from hospitality management and tour operations to customer service and event planning.

These reforms are designed to nurture local talent, create leadership opportunities for Saudi graduates, and ensure that citizens play a central role in shaping the future of tourism in the Kingdom.

Earlier this year, the ministry introduced several incentives to encourage Saudis to pursue careers in tourism.

Wage subsidies for local workers were increased from 30 percent to 50 percent, making the sector more attractive and financially rewarding.

Additionally, financial support was extended to 43 tourism-related professions, a move that broadens opportunities for young Saudis to build successful and sustainable careers in hospitality and travel.

These combined efforts reflect the Kingdom’s broader ambition to diversify its economy, reduce reliance on foreign labor, and create a dynamic tourism industry led by its own citizens.

With growing investments in tourism infrastructure, heritage preservation, and international events, Saudi Arabia is rapidly emerging as a global destination that blends modernity with cultural authenticity.

Minister Ahmed Al-Khateeb reaffirmed that these localization policies are a cornerstone of Saudi Arabia’s mission to make tourism a key pillar of national growth.

“Empowering our citizens in this vital sector ensures that the Saudi spirit of hospitality shines through every visitor experience,” he said.

As tourism continues to expand—welcoming millions of visitors annually—the new localization drive promises not only to create jobs but also to ensure that the sector remains sustainable, competitive, and deeply rooted in Saudi values.

Riyadh – After five years of exemplary diplomatic service, Clive Aquilina Spagnol, the outgoing ambassador of Malta to Saudi Arabia, has concluded his official post, but his journey in the Kingdom is far from over.

The ambassador has chosen to continue living in Saudi Arabia, calling it his “newfound home” and expressing deep admiration for the culture, people, and opportunities the country offers.

Spagnol arrived in Saudi Arabia in November 2020, during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic. Despite the challenging circumstances, he embraced the Kingdom with enthusiasm, determined to explore its rich culture, language, and traditions.

“I want to learn about Saudi Arabia, about Saudi people. I want to go through the walls, see how they work and see how they live, what they think, and discover that they think beautifully, they are open-minded, they traveled the world,” he said, reflecting his genuine curiosity and respect for the nation.

Throughout his tenure, the ambassador focused on deepening and realigning the diplomatic and economic cooperation between Saudi Arabia and Malta. He identified key market opportunities in sectors such as manufacturing and education, helping both countries better understand each other’s potential for collaboration.

“Diplomatic cooperation started decades ago, and they were active or modestly active in the ’80s. For the past six to seven years, the engagement has improved a lot,” Spagnol noted, highlighting the sustained growth in bilateral relations during his term.

One notable aspect of his work was balancing his role as both ambassador and consul. While consular duties are often viewed as administrative, Spagnol found tremendous personal and professional fulfillment in engaging directly with Saudi families.

“Through the consular work, you meet families, you meet beautiful families, you have a lot of contact with the real Saudis. That’s what made me make a lot of friends,” he explained. His approach allowed him to forge lifelong friendships and a deep personal connection to the Kingdom, beyond formal diplomatic networks.

Spagnol also dedicated time to exploring Saudi Arabia extensively, venturing beyond major cities like Riyadh, Jeddah, and Dammam to regions such as Najran, Jouf, and Tabuk, often being the first Maltese diplomat to visit these areas.

By documenting his travels, he encouraged tourism and cultural exchange, helping showcase Saudi Arabia’s diverse landscapes and heritage to a global audience. “Saudi tourism is also increasing to Malta and vice versa,” he said, emphasizing the positive impact of cultural diplomacy on mutual understanding.

The ambassador’s immersion in local life extended to cultural and recreational experiences. He spent time camping in the desert with Saudi families and participating in traditional activities, demonstrating a genuine interest in and respect for the Kingdom’s customs. “I am proud of it … I am staying in Saudi Arabia, I am not moving out of the Kingdom. I decided to make this place my home. It exceeded my expectations,” he said.

Spagnol’s commitment to the Gulf region is reinforced by over a decade of experience in countries such as Qatar, the UAE, and Oman, bringing a wealth of regional insight to his role in Saudi Arabia.

His tenure has been marked not only by professional achievements but also by meaningful personal connections and cultural engagement, leaving a lasting legacy for Maltese-Saudi relations.

As he concludes his official mission, Clive Aquilina Spagnol’s story stands as a testament to the power of diplomacy rooted in respect, curiosity, and cultural immersion. His decision to make Saudi Arabia his home reflects the enduring bonds formed during his service and the opportunities the Kingdom offers for international cooperation, personal growth, and cultural exchange.

The reforms are part of the broader Vision 2030 initiative that is rapidly modernizing the Kingdom—socially, economically, and culturally.

A recent Wall Street Journal review of veteran journalist Karen Elliott House’s latest book, “The Man Who Would Be King,” offers a sweeping view of Saudi Arabia’s transformation under the leadership of Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman. The book profiles the man universally known as MBS, depicting him as a transformative force reshaping the Kingdom’s destiny and influencing the emerging global order.

“MBS… will play a critical and perhaps decisive role in shaping the new regional order,” the book asserts—echoing a growing consensus among international analysts and regional observers alike.

A Kingdom Reimagined

At the heart of MBS’s long-term vision lies NEOM, a $500 billion smart city project meant to position Saudi Arabia at the cutting edge of technological and scientific advancement. “MBS hopes that his new city—known as NEOM—will make Saudi Arabia a dominant force in technological innovation,” House writes.

The reforms are part of the broader Vision 2030 initiative that is rapidly modernizing the Kingdom—socially, economically, and culturally. House highlights how “a younger generation is now free to live something much closer to what their Western peers would recognize as a normal life,” referring to greater social freedoms, entertainment, and job market access for youth and women.

In what the book describes as a high-stakes economic shift, MBS is “placing many multibillion-dollar chips on different alternatives to oil… some will hit big.” From investing in green energy and AI to developing tourism, the Crown Prince is crafting new revenue streams for a nation long reliant on fossil fuels.

One such alternative is tourism—once a niche, now a national priority. “New sources of revenue, like tourism, will have to supplement oil wealth,” the book points out. Major initiatives such as AlUla, Qiddiya, and the Red Sea Project are helping reposition the Kingdom as a global cultural and leisure destination.

A Leadership Redefined

Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman has also redefined the public face of Saudi leadership. “No Saudi ruler before him would be seen riding a dune buggy at a tourist attraction or posing for selfies at a restaurant,” House notes—an observation that underscores MBS’s populist appeal and generational relatability.

Yet this modern image is coupled with firm authority. “The MBS she describes is a formidable character bent on imposing his will,” writes House, underlining the intensity with which the Crown Prince is driving reforms, despite resistance from entrenched interests.

The scale of Saudi Arabia’s transformation is increasingly global in impact. With the Public Investment Fund (PIF) investing in sectors across the world—from tech and AI to entertainment and infrastructure—the Kingdom’s strategic decisions are shaping not just its own future, but also that of international markets and geopolitics.

“The decisions Saudi Arabia makes about investing its massive resources will help shape the global future,” House writes.

Saudi Voices Echo the Sentiment

Reacting to the review, Mohammed Alhamed, Founder and President of Saudi Elite, stated on X (formerly Twitter): “WSJ highlights MBS’s rising global impact through Karen Elliott House’s new book: ‘The Man Who Would Be King.’”

Alhamed added, “The MBS she describes is a leader who’s disrupting norms, reshaping the Kingdom, and steering the Middle East toward a modern and competitive future.”

His remarks reflect a broader sentiment within Saudi Arabia’s emerging elite class, who view the Crown Prince’s assertive agenda as a necessary leap toward relevance and resilience in a fast-changing world.

As the international community watches closely, MBS’s bold reforms continue to challenge perceptions of the Kingdom—and chart an ambitious course toward a post-oil, globally integrated Saudi Arabia.

Saudi Arabia’s “Vision 2030” initiative played a pivotal role in transforming the country’s tourism landscape.

With Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates (UAE), and Morocco taking the lead, Arab countries in 2022 witnessed a remarkable surge in tourism, setting new records and highlighting the growing appeal of the region to global travelers.

According to data released by the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO), Saudi Arabia welcomed an impressive 18 million tourists in 2022, positioning itself as a vibrant and captivating destination for visitors from around the globe. The Kingdom’s strategic efforts to open up to international tourists and promote its rich cultural heritage, modern attractions, and natural wonders have paid off, boosting its tourism industry and diversifying its economy.

The Emirates, known for their ultramodern architecture, luxury shopping, and top-notch hospitality, saw a remarkable influx of 14.8 million tourists in 2022. The UAE’s commitment to enhancing its tourism infrastructure, including expanding world-class airports, iconic hotels, and entertainment facilities, has cemented its status as a must-visit destination. The synergy between traditional culture and futuristic innovation continues to be a major draw for travelers.

Morocco, with its enchanting landscapes, historic cities, and vibrant souks, saw 11 million tourists exploring its colorful streets and soaking in its rich heritage. The country’s sustainable tourism initiatives, aimed at preserving its natural and cultural treasures, have contributed to its increasing popularity among travelers seeking authentic experiences.

Saudi Arabia’s “Vision 2030” initiative played a pivotal role in transforming the country’s tourism landscape. The relaxation of visa regulations, the opening of iconic attractions like Al-Ula and Qiddiya, and the development of luxury resorts along the Red Sea coast have collectively contributed to the surge in visitor numbers. These efforts have not only generated revenue but also created jobs and opportunities for the local population.

The UAE’s commitment to providing unforgettable experiences to tourists was exemplified by hosting Expo 2020 Dubai, a global event that brought the world together under the theme of “Connecting Minds, Creating the Future”. The Expo showcased the UAE’s innovation, culture, and progress, drawing millions of visitors and adding a substantial boost to the country’s tourism numbers.

In Morocco, the preservation of cultural heritage remained a focal point. The successful integration of modern amenities with age-old traditions has made the country a treasure trove for travelers seeking authentic experiences. Initiatives like the “Green Morocco Plan” aimed at sustainable development, the restoration of historical sites, and the promotion of local crafts have all contributed to Morocco’s appeal.

As tourism continues to flourish in Arab countries, the focus on sustainable practices and responsible travel remains paramount. The efforts of these nations to strike a balance between economic growth and environmental preservation are commendable and reflect a broader global trend towards conscious and mindful tourism.

In the wake of this tourism boom, Arab countries are not only captivating the world with their cultural diversity and natural beauty but also contributing significantly to their economies and international reputation. As the 2022 statistics indicate, the Arab world has truly emerged as a powerhouse on the global tourism stage, with Saudi Arabia, the UAE, and Morocco leading the way into a promising and exciting future.
