Doha – U.S. President Donald Trump said on Wednesday that Israel had carried out a strike on Iran’s South Pars

Doha – U.S. President Donald Trump said on Wednesday that Israel had carried out a strike on Iran’s South Pars gas field in a sharp escalation of the conflict, but warned no further such attacks would occur unless Tehran retaliates, after Iranian missiles struck gas infrastructure in Qatar and targeted Saudi Arabia.

The attack on South Pars, a major component of the world’s largest natural gas deposit shared by Iran and Qatar, drove oil prices higher and intensified concerns over global energy supply disruptions.

Trump said Israel had acted “out of anger” and that Washington had no advance knowledge of the operation.

QatarEnergy reported “extensive damage” and sizeable fires at facilities in Ras Laffan Industrial City following missile strikes, while Saudi Arabia said it intercepted four ballistic missiles aimed at Riyadh and thwarted a drone attack on a gas installation in its eastern region.

The strikes mark a significant expansion of hostilities into critical energy infrastructure in the Gulf, a region central to global oil and gas markets. Ras Laffan processes roughly a fifth of the world’s liquefied natural gas, making it one of the most strategically important energy hubs globally.

Iran carried out additional missile attacks on Thursday targeting Qatari gas facilities and the Saudi capital, according to officials, heightening fears of prolonged disruption to energy flows.

The South Pars field itself is a cornerstone of Iran’s gas production and is geologically linked to Qatar’s North Field, underscoring the cross-border risks posed by military escalation. In a post on X, Trump said Israel’s strike had been a response to developments in the region but warned Tehran against further escalation.

He described Iran’s subsequent targeting of Qatar’s LNG facilities as “unjustified,” adding that Doha had not been involved in the initial attack.

Trump said the United States would prevent further Israeli strikes on South Pars unless Iran “unwisely” targets Qatar again. He also warned that any such move by Tehran would trigger a large-scale U.S. response against the gas field.

Earlier reporting by the Wall Street Journal said Trump had approved Israel’s plan to strike Iran’s gas infrastructure, though the president said Washington had no prior knowledge of the specific operation.

Regional fallout widensIran’s actions reflect a broader pattern since the conflict began nearly four weeks ago, with Tehran targeting not only Israel but also U.S. diplomatic and military facilities across the Gulf. Iranian officials have also warned neighbouring states against facilitating attacks on its territory.

Saudi authorities said their air defences successfully neutralised incoming threats, while Qatar has yet to detail the full operational impact of the damage to its LNG facilities.

The widening scope of attacks on energy infrastructure has raised geopolitical and economic stakes, with markets reacting to the potential for sustained disruption across key supply routes and production hubs.

Beirut_ Nearly 800,000 people have been displaced across Lebanon in the first 10 days of the ongoing war between Israel

Beirut_ Nearly 800,000 people have been displaced across Lebanon in the first 10 days of the ongoing war between Israel and the Iran-backed group Hezbollah, aid agencies said, warning that the scale of the displacement is rapidly overwhelming humanitarian capacity in the country.

Humanitarian organization Norwegian Refugee Council said the number of displaced people now represents roughly one in seven residents of Lebanon. The government has so far been able to accommodate only about 120,000 people in shelters as authorities scramble to open additional facilities and bring in emergency supplies.

Lebanon’s Health Ministry said more than 700 people, including 103 children, have been killed since the fighting escalated.

Thousands of families fleeing Israeli evacuation orders have struggled to find accommodation, forcing many to sleep in tents, vehicles or on the streets of the capital Beirut.

Fatima Nazha, a wheelchair user who fled Beirut’s southern suburbs after evacuation warnings, said she spent two days sleeping outdoors with her family before moving into a tent at the country’s largest stadium after schools designated as shelters reached capacity.

Authorities have converted the stadium into a temporary shelter housing more than 800 displaced people in semi-open corridors beneath the stands. Facilities include basic toilets and sinks but limited electricity and no showers.

Humanitarian agencies say years of financial strain and underfunding have limited their ability to respond to the rapidly escalating crisis.

“The needs are escalating much faster than our capacity to respond,” said Mathieu Luciano, head of the International Organization for Migration in Lebanon, during a recent briefing.

Displaced residents have reported rising rents and stricter hotel screening in Beirut after Israeli strikes targeted locations where authorities said members of Iran’s Revolutionary Guard were present.

An overnight Israeli strike in the Ramlet el-Bayda district of Beirut killed at least eight people and wounded more than 30, according to local officials, in an area where displaced families had been camping along the seafront.

The latest wave of displacement began after Hezbollah launched rockets into Israel following the killing of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei at the start of the wider regional war.

Israel subsequently intensified air strikes across Lebanon and issued evacuation notices for dozens of villages south of the Litani River, later expanding warnings to residents of Dahiyeh, a densely populated area on Beirut’s southern edge.

Traffic congestion stretched for miles on major highways leading north from southern Lebanon as residents attempted to flee bombardment.

Along the border, some villages remained briefly populated as residents weighed whether to evacuate, but many ultimately fled after continued strikes and drone activity near the United Nations-monitored Blue Line separating the two countries.

Bangkok, Thailand on Thursday demanded an apology from Iran after a Thai vessel was struck by a projectile in the Strait of Hormuz a day earlier, causing a fire and forcing the crew to abandon the ship, Thailand’s Foreign Ministry said.

The ministry said it had summoned Iran’s ambassador in Bangkok to seek clarification on the circumstances surrounding the incident and to obtain details about the attack on the vessel.

In a statement, the Thai Foreign Ministry said it was requesting a formal explanation from Iranian authorities and pressing for an apology over the damage inflicted on the ship.

Officials said the projectile strike triggered a blaze on board, prompting the crew to evacuate the vessel for safety.

The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps said in a statement carried by the Tasnim News Agency that the vessel had been “fired upon by Iranian fighters,” according to the report.

The statement did not provide further details about the circumstances that led to the strike.

The Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most important maritime chokepoints for energy shipments, has come under heightened scrutiny amid rising tensions linked to the conflict involving Iran and its regional adversaries.

The incident involving the Thai vessel adds to growing concerns about risks to commercial shipping passing through the narrow waterway.

Geneva,up to 3.2 million people have been displaced inside Iran since the conflict began on Feb. 28, the United Nations

Geneva,up to 3.2 million people have been displaced inside Iran since the conflict began on Feb. 28, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) said on Thursday, warning that the number could rise further as hostilities continue.

The U.N. refugee agency said the estimate was based on preliminary assessments of the number of households forced to leave their homes during the fighting. The conflict has triggered large-scale internal displacement across affected areas as residents move to safer locations within the country.

“This figure is likely to continue rising as hostilities persist, marking a worrying escalation in humanitarian needs,” UNHCR said in a statement.

The agency said the 3.2 million figure reflects early data gathered from humanitarian monitoring and may change as more information becomes available from affected regions.

UNHCR noted that displacement inside Iran has intensified since the outbreak of the conflict at the end of February, with families relocating from areas affected by military activity.

The agency warned that the growing number of displaced people is increasing pressure on humanitarian services and assistance networks.

UNHCR said the continuing hostilities could further expand the scale of internal displacement and humanitarian needs in the coming weeks as assessments continue.

PARIS, March 6 — Iran’s internet connectivity remains at roughly 1% of normal levels more than five days after authorities

PARIS, March 6 — Iran’s internet connectivity remains at roughly 1% of normal levels more than five days after authorities shut down access following U.S. and Israeli air strikes, internet monitoring group NetBlocks said on Thursday, leaving much of the country struggling to access outside information or communicate with the wider world.

Iranian authorities cut internet access on Saturday after the start of the conflict involving the United States and Israel, triggering a nationwide disruption that has severely limited communication inside and outside the country. In a message posted on the social media platform X, NetBlocks said the blackout had exceeded 120 hours, with connectivity “still flatlining around 1 percent of ordinary levels.”connectivity nearly haltedThe prolonged shutdown has left many Iranians unable to make international calls or reliably connect online. Calls from overseas to Iranian mobile phones or landlines have become nearly impossible, according to residents contacted through intermittent messaging. Some users report brief windows during the day when limited connectivity allows them to send text messages, though voice messages and calls frequently fail to transmit.“The internet speed is very slow,” a resident in Tehran said in a message, requesting anonymity for security reasons. “You can’t call and voice messages don’t get delivered. We can just text.”NetBlocks said telecommunications companies in Iran had begun sending warnings to users attempting to connect to the global internet, threatening possible legal action.residents seek alternative accessWith regular connections largely unavailable, some Iranians have turned to alternative technologies to maintain limited communication.

According to residents, some users have attempted to access the internet through unauthorised subscriptions to satellite-based services such as Starlink, though availability and connectivity remain inconsistent.A resident in Bukan in western Iran described the connection as unreliable and extremely slow.“The internet situation here is abysmal,” the resident said in a message. “It connects and disconnects. The connection is slow, so the VPNs don’t work.”restrictions compound existing controlsEven before the current shutdown, many Iranians relied on virtual private networks to bypass restrictions on foreign social media platforms.Services such as Instagram are typically restricted in Iran, prompting widespread use of VPNs under normal conditions. With internet access severely curtailed, some residents who are able to connect briefly have been sharing updates with friends and family who remain cut off.Shima, a 33-year-old resident of Tehran, said she had been sending messages to friends describing conditions in the capital as waves of missile and bombing strikes hit the city during the ongoing conflict.
