France Deploys Military Aircraft as Wildfires Intensify
PARIS- French Prime Minister Sebastien Lecornu has ordered the armed forces to deploy an A400M military transport aircraft from Saturday to support efforts to contain major wildfires burning across southwestern France, according to his office, as authorities seek to strengthen aerial firefighting capabilities amid worsening conditions.
The aircraft will be fitted with a dispensing system capable of releasing up to 20 tonnes of fire retardant in a single mission. Officials said the payload is comparable to the combined capacity of two Dash firefighting aircraft, providing additional support to existing emergency response operations.
The deployment had originally been planned for the end of July to allow for further preparation and testing of the aircraft and its firefighting equipment. However, the government decided to accelerate the timetable as fires continued to spread in the country’s southwest.
The A400M is a military transport aircraft primarily designed for tactical and strategic airlift missions, but it can be adapted for emergency operations through specialised equipment. The dispensing kit enables the aircraft to distribute fire retardant over affected areas, supplementing conventional aerial firefighting fleets during periods of heightened wildfire activity.
French authorities have increasingly relied on a combination of civilian and military resources to respond to severe wildfires, which have become more frequent and intense during the summer months. Extended periods of high temperatures, dry vegetation and strong winds can rapidly accelerate the spread of fires, placing pressure on firefighting services and prompting governments to expand available resources.
The announcement comes as wildfires continue to affect parts of southern Europe, with France and neighbouring Spain both experiencing major blazes that have forced large-scale evacuations. Recent reports indicate that more than 80,000 people have fled forest fires across the two countries as emergency crews battle to contain multiple fronts.
France maintains a dedicated fleet of firefighting aircraft, including water bombers and other specialised planes, which are routinely deployed during the annual wildfire season. Military assets can be called upon when civilian capacities are stretched or when additional logistical support is required.
The accelerated deployment of the A400M reflects the government’s effort to reinforce aerial operations while the fires remain active. According to the prime minister’s office, the aircraft’s ability to carry a substantial volume of fire retardant is expected to enhance suppression efforts in areas where ground access may be difficult.
Wildfires have become an increasingly significant challenge across Mediterranean countries in recent years, with climate conditions contributing to longer and more severe fire seasons. Governments across the region have expanded cooperation on aerial firefighting and emergency response as extreme weather events place growing demands on civil protection agencies.
French emergency services continue to work to contain the fires in the southwest while authorities monitor weather conditions that could influence the pace and direction of the blazes. The government has not announced further military deployments beyond the A400M aircraft, but officials said the armed forces stand ready to support national firefighting efforts as required.
