France Evacuates 10,000 as Wildfire Rages Near Bordeaux
SAUMOS_More than 10,000 people were evacuated overnight in southwestern France after a fast-moving wildfire burned through about 2,000 hectares of land west of Bordeaux, authorities said on Thursday, as hundreds of firefighters worked to contain the blaze.
The Gironde prefecture said around 500 firefighters had been deployed to battle the fire, describing the blaze as particularly difficult to control because of its intensity and rapid spread. Officials said no injuries had been reported.
The wildfire is burning near the Arcachon Bay region, a major tourist destination on France’s Atlantic coast. Many of those evacuated were holidaymakers staying at nearby campsites, where emergency services ordered precautionary evacuations as the fire advanced.
Authorities continued firefighting operations through the night, with crews seeking to prevent the flames from spreading further toward populated areas and tourist facilities. Emergency officials have not reported damage to residential areas, but the situation remains under close monitoring.
The latest wildfire comes as Europe experiences another severe fire season fueled by prolonged periods of extreme heat. According to available data, wildfires have already burned more land across Europe this year than the average annual area affected over the past two decades.
Scientists have linked the growing frequency and intensity of heatwaves and wildfires across Europe to human-induced climate change. The continent, regarded as the world’s fastest-warming, has endured three intense and closely spaced heatwaves this year, creating conditions favorable for the rapid spread of wildfires.
France has faced repeated outbreaks of large wildfires during recent summers, particularly in its southern and southwestern regions, where high temperatures, dry vegetation and strong winds have increased fire risks.
Firefighters remained on the ground on Thursday as authorities continued efforts to contain the blaze and ensure the safety of residents and visitors in the affected areas.
