Spain Races to Contain Wildfires Before Weather Worsens
MADRID-Spain entered what authorities described as a critical phase in its battle against widespread wildfires on Monday, with Interior Minister Fernando Grande-Marlaska warning that the next two days would be decisive for bringing the blazes under control before deteriorating weather conditions complicate firefighting efforts.
Speaking to reporters, Grande-Marlaska said Monday and Tuesday represented a crucial window for emergency services to contain the fires. He warned that weather forecasts indicated conditions would become significantly less favourable from Wednesday, making suppression operations more difficult.
The fires have forced the evacuation of tens of thousands of residents and scorched as much as 25,000 hectares of land, according to authorities. Firefighters, including personnel from Spain’s Military Emergencies Unit (UME), have been deployed to battle the advancing flames in affected areas.
Emergency crews have continued efforts to prevent the fires from spreading to residential communities as authorities monitor changing weather conditions that could accelerate the blazes. The anticipated rise in temperatures and less favourable firefighting conditions have heightened concerns among emergency officials.
Grande-Marlaska urged continued efforts to contain the fires before the expected shift in weather, describing the coming 48 hours as pivotal to the overall response.
Spain has experienced increasingly severe wildfire seasons in recent years, with prolonged periods of high temperatures and dry conditions contributing to elevated fire risks across parts of the country.
