Sudan Army Reopens Strategic Highway to El-Obeid
KHARTOUM-Sudan’s army has regained control of a key highway linking the capital, Khartoum, with the strategic city of El-Obeid, military sources said on Monday, marking a significant advance in the conflict with the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF).
Two military sources told AFP that the army’s latest operation had pushed RSF fighters westward, away from El-Obeid, the capital of North Kordofan state, where the paramilitary group had sought to tighten its encirclement.
According to the sources, who spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorised to brief the media, recapturing the highway restores a crucial transport corridor between Khartoum and El-Obeid and opens a second supply route to the city and areas beyond.
The renewed access is expected to improve the army’s logistical capabilities by facilitating the movement of personnel and supplies to one of Sudan’s key conflict zones.
El-Obeid has remained a strategically important location in the country’s civil war because of its position as a gateway between central Sudan and the western regions, where fighting has continued between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the RSF.
The latest battlefield development comes as both sides continue to compete for control of major transport routes and urban centres across Sudan, with shifting front lines affecting military operations and humanitarian access.
Neither the Sudanese army nor the Rapid Support Forces immediately issued public statements on the reported advance, and AFP could not independently verify the claims made by the military sources.
