Trump Convenes Camp David Cabinet Amid Iran War Pressures
WASHINGTON-U.S. President Donald Trump convened his Cabinet at the Camp David presidential retreat on Friday as his administration faced mounting challenges from the ongoing conflict with Iran, rising gasoline prices and growing political pressure ahead of November’s congressional midterm elections.
The meeting marked Trump’s third visit to Camp David during his second term, a notable departure from his usual preference for spending weekends at his golf properties rather than the presidential retreat in western Maryland. The White House said it would be the 13th Cabinet meeting of Trump’s second term.
White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said last week that the gathering would provide Cabinet members with a different setting for their discussions. She described the meeting as an opportunity for the administration to meet together at Camp David, while indicating that it would be the latest in a series of Cabinet sessions held during Trump’s second term.
Foreign policy was expected to dominate the agenda as the administration continued to manage the conflict with Iran. Trump remains engaged in military exchanges involving Iranian targets in a war that has stretched into its fifth month, despite his earlier expectation that the fighting would conclude within a matter of weeks.
The prolonged conflict has contributed to higher gasoline prices, adding to concerns about the domestic economic impact of the war. Rising fuel costs have become an increasingly significant political issue for Republicans as they prepare to defend their congressional majorities in the November midterm elections.
Public backing for the conflict has also weakened. A Reuters-Ipsos poll released this week found that only one-third of Americans support the war, marking the lowest level of approval recorded by the survey since the early stages of the conflict.
The decline in public support and the economic consequences of the war have heightened concern among Republican lawmakers, who are assessing the potential electoral impact of sustained inflationary pressures linked to higher energy prices.
Trump’s Cabinet meetings typically extend beyond an hour and include updates from department heads on developments within their respective agencies. The sessions also frequently feature Cabinet members outlining administration priorities and discussing the implementation of government policies.
Following the Camp David meeting, Trump was scheduled to travel to his golf club in Bedminster, New Jersey, for the weekend.
Camp David has historically served as a secure venue for presidential meetings on major national security and foreign policy issues. Although previous U.S. presidents have regularly used the retreat for high-level deliberations and diplomatic engagements, Trump has made comparatively limited use of the facility during his presidency.
Friday’s meeting came as the administration sought to balance military operations abroad with growing economic and political concerns at home, with the Iran conflict and its domestic repercussions expected to remain central issues in the months leading to the midterm elections.
