UN Calls for Evacuation of Stranded Hormuz Seafarers
GENEVA-The United Nations on Friday called for the urgent evacuation and repatriation of around 6,000 seafarers stranded in the Strait of Hormuz, warning that they face a worsening humanitarian and human rights crisis as hostilities continue in one of the world’s most strategically important waterways.
UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Turk appealed to governments, shipowners and other stakeholders to take immediate action to protect crews trapped aboard vessels unable to leave the area safely, according to his spokesperson, Shabia Mantoo.
The International Maritime Organization estimates that at least 6,000 seafarers aboard hundreds of vessels remain stranded in the strait despite a temporary ceasefire, while the whereabouts of many others remain unknown.
Speaking in Geneva, Mantoo said Turk had urged states, shipping companies and relevant authorities to ensure the protection of stranded crews through consular assistance, the delivery of essential supplies and the facilitation of safe evacuations and repatriation.
She added that parties to the conflict should work urgently to guarantee safe passage for seafarers seeking to disembark while allowing the delivery of food, water, fuel and other critical supplies.
