EU Envoys Approve 21st Sanctions Package Against Russia
BRUSSELS_European Union ambassadors reached a political agreement on a 21st package of sanctions against Russia on Thursday, marking the latest round of restrictive measures adopted by the bloc in response to Moscow, an EU diplomat said.
According to the diplomat, representatives of the EU’s member states approved the sanctions package during a meeting in Brussels, clearing the way for the bloc to proceed with the formal adoption process.
The diplomat said technical work on the package would now be finalized before a written procedure for its official adoption is launched later on Thursday. The written procedure is the final step required for the sanctions to enter into force under the European Union’s decision-making process.
No details of the contents of the new sanctions package were immediately disclosed.
The agreement represents the European Union’s 21st round of sanctions targeting Russia since the bloc began imposing restrictive measures in response to Moscow’s actions. EU sanctions have previously included financial restrictions, trade measures, export controls and asset freezes targeting individuals, entities and sectors of the Russian economy.
The latest package comes as the European Union continues to coordinate its response to Russia alongside its international partners while maintaining pressure through economic and diplomatic measures.
Officials are expected to complete the remaining technical procedures before the package is formally adopted and implemented under EU rules.
