Iran Warns Ukraine of Consequences After Caspian Sea Ship Strike
TEHRAN-Iran on Monday warned Ukraine of “unforeseen” consequences following what Tehran described as a deadly attack on an Iranian commercial vessel in the Caspian Sea, escalating tensions after Kyiv said it had struck ships involved in military cargo operations linked to Iran and Russia.
Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baqaei condemned the attack as an unlawful act that violated the United Nations Charter, saying it was an unjustified action that would not go unanswered. Speaking at a weekly news briefing, he said the consequences of Ukraine’s actions would be “unforeseen.”
The warning followed comments by Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, who on Sunday vowed that Iran would respond after what he described as a Ukrainian strike on an Iranian ship operating in the Caspian Sea.
According to Iran’s foreign ministry, the attack caused the vessel to explode, killing one sailor and injuring several others. Tehran described the ship as a commercial vessel and maintained that the Islamic Republic had not participated in the Russia-Ukraine conflict.
President Volodymyr Zelensky said on Saturday that Ukrainian forces had achieved significant results through long-range strikes in the Caspian Sea, including attacks on vessels involved in transporting military cargo connected to Iran, as well as a warship.
Ukraine’s intelligence services separately said on Telegram that drone strikes had targeted cargo vessels under international sanctions which were allegedly being used to transport military supplies between Iran and Russia.
In a statement posted on X, Araghchi accused Zelensky of attacking an Iranian commercial vessel and said the strike constituted a violation of the UN Charter. He also alleged that the attack had been carried out at Israel’s behest in an effort to draw Europe further into the conflict.
Araghchi said he had conveyed Iran’s position during separate telephone conversations with European Union foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas and Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, telling them that the attack could not go unanswered.
The incident highlights the widening geographical scope of Russia’s war in Ukraine, with Kyiv increasingly targeting logistics and transport networks that it says support Russia’s military operations beyond the immediate battlefield.
Iranian state television reported that Tehran summoned Ukraine’s chargé d’affaires on Saturday to protest what it described as a hostile and criminal act.
The exchange comes amid continuing scrutiny of Iran’s relationship with Russia during the war. While Tehran insists it has not intervened in the conflict, Ukraine has repeatedly accused Iran of supporting Moscow’s military capabilities.
