South Korea Court Hands Yoon Suspended Sentence in Election Case
SEOUL-A South Korean court on Monday sentenced former President Yoon Suk Yeol to 18 months in prison, suspended for three years, after finding him guilty of violating the country’s election law by making false statements during his 2022 presidential election campaign.
The ruling marks another legal setback for Yoon, who was convicted of breaching election rules through false campaign statements made during his successful bid for the presidency. Under the court’s decision, Yoon will avoid immediate imprisonment provided the suspended sentence is not revoked.
The verdict could also carry significant financial consequences for Yoon’s conservative People Power Party. If the judgment is upheld through the appeals process, the party could be required to repay 39.7 billion won (US$27.1 million) in election expenses that were reimbursed by South Korea’s National Election Commission following Yoon’s 2022 election victory.
The ruling is subject to appeal, meaning the sentence and its associated financial implications will not take effect until all legal proceedings have been concluded.
The case centres on allegations that Yoon made false statements during his presidential campaign, conduct that the court determined violated South Korea’s election law.
The latest judgment comes as Yoon continues to face a series of legal challenges following the end of his presidency, with separate criminal proceedings against the former leader also underway.
